A daily sight: Rolling over the Ganaraska River valley, VIA Rail #67 is Turbo equipped today.
At Port Hope, June 27, 1982 Kodachrome by S.Danko
By October 31,1982: Turbo gone.
What's interesting:
the TurboTrains, there were five TurboTrains built circa 1967 – 1968, and CN intended to operate 2 sets in tandem on each of two trains with the fifth set as a spare.
a collaboration between MLW and United Aircraft (United Technologies) were each Turbo set was built as seven semi permanent coupled cars: 5 coaches, 2 Turbo Power (coach) Cars: Turbo Power cars: #125 to #129 inclusive and #150 to #154 inclusive;
The Turbo saga is a long story, to keep this brief: During a 1971 're-build' program CN decided to increase passenger capacity, breaking up two sets and adding two intermediate coaches to each of the three remaining intact sets.
The remaining four Power Cars and four coaches were sold to Amtrak, however before delivery Turbo Power Cars 128 and 154 (Amtrak 54 & 55) were involved in a wreck that retired 54 (128) and 55 (153) was retained by CN as a spare. (per Trackside)
Despite the reputation, after the 1973 reintroduction through to 1982 retirement, the three Turbo Train sets developed a 97% availability rating ( per Wikipedia)
To date I have located only one image showing (one of the five) original whole seven car CN Turbo Train(s), making the image the rarest of rare ( for example more rare than images of CP Rail's one of a kind M-640 #4744):
an original
the only M-640
