Caption: Although Robot Cars were manufactured using also coach and boxcar bodies, this is one example of only 11 Robots constructed using a locomotive shell.(#'s 1006-1016) The 1013 was the former CP 4457. This is a system in which a control car located usually just ahead of mid-train away from direct MU control can be controlled by the engineer in the lead consist. This was accomplished using radio signals. The 1013 housed radio equipment and data processing equipment to communicate between lead units and mid-train slaves. This particular unit went into operation Oct. 1972. By 1983, what is now known as Locotrol equipment was put into the noses of newer SD40-2s. The system was vital for running heavier trains thru the mountains of the West. I've no information as to when 1013 and the others of its kind left the CP roster, but I suspect they did not survive past 1990. In essence, this method of train control was the fore-runner of todays' DPU.

Neat find Arnold!!!!
I really like the look of FM 4 wheel trucks. I have never ridden an FM, the trucks sure look like the ride will be smooth. At least this old boy enjoyed some extra life, even if it meant no engine aboard. Nice photo Mr. Mooney.
