Caption: A trio of Alco RS32’s ( DL721), 8025-8038-8027, are on an NYC westbound at Canfield in May 1964. The train has a great mixture of freight including a 28-foot “shorty” tank car six cars back. The gondola appears to have a load of steel plate on a 45-degree angle, complete with bracing. The track maintenance is still being kept up, including removal of the old ties from the eastward passing track (between Doug and the road crossing). The RS32 from Alco was their counterpart to EMD’s GP20. NYC would end up buying 25 from Alco and 15 from EMD of these 2,000 hp models. The RS32’s would get renumbered for the Penn Central merger, by changing the first digit only, from 8 to 2.
