W914's CWR set had been set out from the previous night's 451 along with one cylindrical hopper for KWH Pipe (Uponor) in town. The power, IC 2463, ran light down from North Bay to pick it up and take it north to the Trout Creek area but first they motored past the north end and on the main and after pausing at the yard office for a couple of minutes, continued south to disconnect the hopper before heading back to the north end of the trainset to hook up and get down to business.

During the shoulder seasons the diesel isn't spun on the manual turntables as it's heavier than the steamer and there's at least one less crewmember, so return runs from Fairy Lake have the loco oriented butt-end forward. Not the best for photo opportunities, but it is what it is.

The GMD1 was my favorite type of locomotive, probably because it was old and gnarly like me, and although 1422 was my favorite of the class it certainly wasn't the only one I ever shot. Witness 1431 as it grabs a cut of empty 'racks to take up to the Ford auto loading facility as the grass begins to green up in the spring of 2007.

Her name was Bridgette, if memory serves correctly, and she was often seen working around Oakville Yard back in those days. In this shot she is captured giving her all at throwing a switch while 1422 patiently waits in the background.

Attended a wedding in Parry Sound this afternoon, got there early to see if I could catch anything going over the harbor on the CP trestle. Missed the first one by a stoplight, but caught this one about 1/2 hour later, a long CN manifest with about 1/2 mile of oilcans bringing up the rear.

Riding the Waterloo Central steam excursion train is a great way to spend family time and introduce the kiddies to the heritage of bygone days, but for the advanced rail photographers their hyped photo run-by can be a major disappointment. There is obviously just no place in a "heritage" type image for a fluorescent safety vest! I understand the need for safe crowd management in this type of situation, but the volunteers at the south end of the photo line were quite capable of achieving just that without standing 20 feet out in front like these two felt was necessary. Of course with the train approaching from the north this put them right in the line of photographic fire, thereby ruining pretty much everyone's shots. My recommendation would be to just chase and photograph the train while supporting their endeavors with a donation instead of riding, and leave the ticket sales to the cell-phone crowd. My only half-decent shots were taken after the ride when the train was dead-heading back to St. Jacobs, except for the plume flowing the wrong direction when there was a plume. Oh, and at this time of year perhaps (if possible) running the excursion an hour later would put the sun less head-on and light the side of the loco a bit better - just sayin'. I have to admit I debated whether or not to submit this shot at all, but I feel those planning on driving a long distance like we did would appreciate knowing what they would be up against.
