About Stuart Streit

I've had a life long interest in trains since receiving a Triang Hornby set for Xmas at age 10 (might have been my 10th birthday?). Started with the usual 4' x 8' sheet of plywood layout and with expansion managed to take over approximately 1/4 of my parents basement. Following engineering at McMaster worked for a small manufacturer prior to obtaining employment in the rail industry. My wife says I'm the only person she knows that turned a hobby into a career!

VIA FP9A No. 6516 is shown departing westbound from London with a tidy nicely matched four car consist. Note the combination baggage car second in line. Built for Canadian National by GMD London in January 1957 the ‘covered wagon’ is shown sporting its third paint scheme following original olive/black and Allan Fleming orange/black ‘Zebra Stripe’. Incredibly, the venerable ‘Bull Dog’ nosed unit is still in service in the employee of Pan American Railways. Sold at the end of 1989 by VIA to the Conway Scenic Railroad Pan American would acquire the FP9A in 2009. Note as well the CN office tower complex in the background. Following the controlled <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLo6z6bGgkA" target="_blank">implosion</a> conducted on February 4th <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKkYKa1XMTI
" target="_blank">2001</a> at 9:15 a.m. the skyline shown above was forever changed.

With a nod to Mitchell Gault’s evocative <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=40765" target="_blank">image</a>, VIA F40PH-2D No. 6444 is shown gliding to a stop at St. Marys Ontario. Compare the foliage growth that has occurred over the intervening twenty-two years along with the renewed Station Sign. Tragically, No. 6444 would be involved in a lethal <a href="https://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/rail/2012/R12T0038/R12T0038.html" target="_blank">derailment</a> east of Aldershot Ontario on February 26th 2012 and be removed from the roster the following year.

-While leading an all MLW consist CP M630 No. 4563 is westbound out of
Cambridge Ontario about to duck under the Cedar Creek Rd overpass.
Delivered from MLW (11/1969) as a member of the first independently
constructed M630’s the unit would prove to be a survivalist. Originally
intended to be identified 4517, the big six motor would be accepted as
4575 under a new numbering strategy launched by CP to segregate
locomotives equipped with then new fangled remote control gear for
British Columbia unit train coal service. Alterations to the on board
remote control gear in 1971 resulted in the unit being renumbered to
4563. <br><br>Retired in 1993, No. 4563 would be among the handful of ‘phoenix’
units unretired and returned to service in 1994. Finally ‘put out to
pasture’ by CP at the end of 1995 fate would intervene once again and
4563 would be spruced up and donated the Canadian Railway Museum (now
Exporail) in Delson, QC. A detailed history of 4563 was published in

LRC-2 No. 6904, constructed by BBD in 1980, is shown at the head end of rather bizarre consist; F9B No. 6634/EGU/Tempo coaches. Reason for the Electrical Generating Unit is the lack of pass through HEP cables on the F9B. To enhance motive power flexibility CN modified three former NSC built smooth side baggage cars with diesel generator HEP equipment such that any suitably geared locomotive could be deployed into Tempo service.

Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia C-630M Nos. 2015 (ROBERT BURNS) and 2032 (LORD BYRON) are shown on a late summer Saturday evening. Constructed by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) for Canadian National in 1968, both would be acquired for the start up of the short line enterprise in October of 1993. While No. 2015 would be retired in 1996, No. 2032 would toil away for a decade along the east coast of Canada prior to being sold for scrap in 2003. Note the CN company service flat car with a load of rail from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Steel_Corporation"target="_blank">Sydney Steel Corporation</a>.

My dad spent some thirty-three years (1956 – 1989) in the employ of the Steel Company of Canada, or ‘Stelco’ as the once mighty firm was better known. Rising through the ranks over the years to middle management, he achieved status sufficient to secure an unrestricted photo pass for a certain interested offspring. If only I had the wisdom to use it more than once! No. 92 was delivered from GMD London in January of 1966. Prior to being repainted and re-branded as Lake Erie Works No. 459, the squat cabbed switcher would toil away at the Hamilton water front complex until mid 2007. The unit, now safety yellow, is reported as still being active at the Lake Erie shore steel maker. The statement on the rear coupled rolling stock reads ‘WARNING DO NOT RIDE ON GOAT’. What is the purpose of a GOAT? A fascinating, somewhat dated history/analysis of Stelco is available <a href="https://macsphere.mcmaster.ca/bitstream/11375/18710/1/Loschiavo_Micheal_A_1984_Geo4C6.pdf">online.</a>

Bygone era; over the last several years TOFC traffic has disappeared from the scene. No. 9474 was delivered by GMD in July of 1974. In 1995, after some twenty years of service, the unit would leave the roster and be transformed by AMF to MBTA GP40LH-2 commuter locomotive No. 1115.

CN GP40-2L(W) No. 9432 (GMD 4/1974) would leave the roster in 2000. Acquired by Helm Financial, the wide cab unit would become Maine Central No. 502 and is currently still active.

CN No. 2106 was constructed by BBD in early 1982. The burly unit is shown leading Conrail C40-8W No. 6126 past a solid string of autoracks, most likely staged for the nearby Ford Oakville plant. Unlike the EMD F/FP45 units from the mid 1960’s, the reincarnated cowl structure was more than cosmetic. Fitted with access doors, routine maintenance was entirely feasible. No. 2106 was among the longer serving HR-616’s and would depart the roster as part of a sale of several sister units to National Railway Equipment (NRE). A number of the HR-616’s would linger in storage for years at the NRE facility in Silvis, IL.

VIA F40PH-2 No. 6419 leans into the curve piloting No. 73 westward out of London on a sultry August holiday Monday (Simcoe Day in Ontario). Constructed by GMD London in January of 1987, in the interim the twenty-year old unit has been repainted and has sprouted a roof top AC unit. Remanufactured by CAD Railway in late 2011, the now F40PH-3 continues to toil away for the national passenger carrier.

Plenty of power - some 10,600 HP! CN SD40-2 (W) 5320 (GMD 12/1979) together with SD50F No. 5428 (GMD 8/1986) and fifteen month old ES44DC No. 2223 lead a relatively short seventeen car consist eastward into London. Of the locomotives shown only the wide body ‘Draper Taper’ unit is off the CN roster; sold to Allied Services in 2008, most likely to be parted out. Elder statesman No. 5320, together with most of the surviving wide-nose SD40-2's, now calls Alberta home.

As a crown corporation Canadian National enjoyed a lifelong, radically distinct funding formula. While this was not perhaps the best deployment of tax payer dollars, CN’s Research and Development group did contribute significantly to railway equipment development over the years. Noteworthy examples include traction control and the well known ‘Crew Comfort Cab’, still the state of the art today. One of the less successful concepts was the, so called, ‘Draper Taper’ full width locomotive car body.
In the early 1980’s Canadian National’s R&D division collaborated with Bombardier (BBD), formerly Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), on a project to improve locomotive operational efficiency by reintroducing the full width/cowl car body. The added space was employed to warm and dry cooling air such that associated moisture that potentially could damage internal components was removed. The full width roof geometry also provided for built-in snow shields; formerly accessories mounted directly behind the cab. Fitted with access doors, routine maintenance was entirely feasible. Seeking to hold on to a slice of the NA locomotive market, BBD spent much development effort on their newly launched line of ‘High Reliability’ series of locomotives which included the cowl bodied six axle 3,200 HP HR-616 (CN 2100 -2119). Unfortunately, the new ‘HR’ series locomotives proved to be as maintenance intensive as their predecessors and shortly after the privatization of CN in 1996 all would be dispatched from the railway. While both GMD and GE would develop their own version of the ‘Draper Taper’ the overall concept was relatively short lived; 1982 – 1994. Only CN, BC Rail, Canadian Pacific and Quebec North Shore & Labrador would partake of the idea. In the end, ‘off the shelf’, standard model locomotives would prevail. A very thorough background on the HR’s can be found in the fabulous Glenn Courtney/Ken Goslett/Kevin Holland chronicle ‘CNR Diesel Locomotives’ – Volume 2. HR-616 No. 2106 leads an eclectic gaggle of motive power down bound through Bayview Junction including a 2000 series C-630M, GP40-2L (W) No. 9464, GP9 No. 4506 and F7Au No. 9165. Of the units listed, only the elderly (built by GMD 11/1956) GP9 remains; reincarnated as GP9RM No. 7081. Note the lack of ditch lights on No. 2106. CN No. 2106 was constructed by BBD in early 1982. No. 2106 was among the longer serving HR-616’s and would depart the roster as part of a sale of several sister units to National Railway Equipment (NRE). A number of the HR-616’s would linger in storage for years at the NRE facility in Silvis, IL.

<b>ACTON.</b>

November 15, 2018 marked the end of an era, being the last day of the GEXR operations on the Guelph sub. This brought a lot of nostalgia for the awesome way the GEXR ran there operations through the years, true railroaders and railroading at its best. Next came the excitment of the new era being ushered in with the blue GATX leasors, daylight 431s and GMD-1s (rhyming is incidental, haha).

Not too often thought about, for me at least, is the era before GEXR when CN tamed the Guelph Sub. Combing through more of Norm Conways collection, has revealed that he caught the Acton action, and in the early twilight of CNs MLW fleet.

<br>
Acton is a very interesting place for foaming. To the west, the relief from the ruling grade at Limehouse to the east. West of Acton, highway 7 provides a nice vantage and open area as proven by <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/gexr-431-crests-the-hill-at-acton-on-as-a-dodge-ram-paces-the-train-on-parallel-ontario-highway-7-some-courageous-artists-or-vandals-depending-what-side-of-the-spectrum-youre-on-painted-sp" target=blank>Mike Molnar's</a> and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/gexr-431-climbs-acton-hill-with-5-emds-this-sure-sounded-nice" target=blank>AJS's</a> shots.
To the east, the grade at Limehouse make for a specacular show (I'm told), espcially with the second generation EMD power on the drawbar as seen by <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/with-the-motive-power-on-goderich-exeter-trains-431432-typically-the-same-most-days-the-challenge-becomes-finding-new-locations-and-different-scenery-the-stretch-of-track-between-limehouse-and-acto" target=blank>Marcus W Stevens</a>, <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/cngexr-431-makes-some-noise-as-they-attack-the-hill-coming-through-acton-with-cn-2416-on-the-point" target=blank>Cityslicker</a> and again <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/there-are-some-shots-that-just-can-not-be-done-on-a-sunny-day-between-acton-and-limehouse-there-are-a-few-locations-that-only-work-in-this-kind-of-lighting-conditions-in-this-shot-gexr-train-431-is" target=blank>Marcus W Stevens</a> shots. Not too long before Norms shot, <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16428" target=blank>Bill Thomson</a> caught a westbound charging the hill with similar power.

The leader of the Eastbound Extra, CN 2305 built almost exactly 49 years ago in April 1970, is an M-636 that lasted on the rosted until mid-1990s. The younger cousin, HR 616 built by Bombardier in 1982 <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/the-aftermath-the-remains-of-cn-hr616-2105-are-seen-two-days-after-being-in-the-lead-of-train-272-when-it-was-involved-in-a-major-rear-end-collision-on-the-strathroy-subdivision-the-unit-was-on-the" target=blank>suffered a worse fate as seen here with Jason Noe's shot</a> 11 years later in 1995.

<b>DUNDAS. </b>A quartet of GP-40-2s handle a string of ore cars up the hill through the subdivisions namesake city of Dundas. Per information attained from facebook via <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/author/cv_acr?bwbps_page_7445=5">Chris van der Heide</a>, the suspect ore train is likely a slag train origination loads is Subdury and hauling them to Paris (Thanks for the info by the way Chris). As further evidence, <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/a-rather-noteworthy-lashup-on-an-eastbound-slag-extra-which-is-about-to-enter-the-oakville-sub-off-the-dundas-at- bayview-junction-hamilton-rare-combination-even-for-back-in-the-80s-cn-2104-919">Arnold Mooney caught the same movement</a>, likely around the same time in 1984. Ore trains are not an unfamiliar site in southern Ontario. For many years, including the majority of the 80s at least (I'm unsure about the specific timeline but curious if anyone else knows?), there was a regular ore train from Temagami on the ONR down to the blast furnace at Dofasco in Hamilton. This bygone gem is well documented with <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/main-page/back-in-the-days-of-the-ore-train-a-run-from-mines-in-temagami-to-hamilton- for-dofasco-it-usually-got-5-units-gp40-2-or-sd40s-and-90-cars">Dave Brook's</a> and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=23934">Glenn Courtney's</a> photos. On a side note, Dave, you said under Arnold's shot above that you worked a few of these trains, can't help but wonder if you were on this one!?<br><br>Dundas was a popular place for railfans, drawing out many, as evidence by the railfans in this photo alone. The aging scene is well documented throughout this era. <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/a-view-with-a-bit-of-everything-historical-the-old- dundas-station-on-borrowed-time-as-steps-to-move-it-and-preserve-it-fell-thru-awaits-its-demise-as-via-75-with-a-rare-mlw-fpa-2u-6758-lead">The station</a> likely drew many out, as it provided an accessibly yet secluded place to watch westbounds charge the grade. <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/cn- 5047-5525-westbound-pass-the-old-canada-crushed-stone-ltd-facility-near-mile-4-dundas-sub-this-image-while-a-tad-grainy-shows-a-rather-open-view-of-the-old- rail-siding-which-led-up-to-the-larg"> Canada Crushed Stone</a> also provided a unique backdrop (<a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=7210">and shooting platform!</a>). Norm especially seems to have had Dundas as a favorite location for a while (which makes me wonder if you may have run into him here Arnold?). Fortunately, despite the fading access and encroaching trees, this location still draws in railfans in resent years including <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/cn-train-no-435-sweeps-through-the-curves-at-dundas-ontario-with-an-assortment-of-power-that-has- become-increasingly-common-as-of-late">Ryan Gaynor's</a> and <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/upload/cn-148-glides-down-dundas-peak-is-this-elevated- enough-or-what">Jude B's</a> recent shots.

A mid-spring Friday evening finds freshly painted VIA FP9A 6505 guiding No. 72 upbound through the cross overs at Bayview Junction. Constructed by GMD London as CN 6505 in September of 1954 the Emperor’s new dress would only see only a couple additional years of VIA service being set aside and stored in the early 1990’s. Eventually acquired by the Conway Scenic Railroad the venerable unit would be conveyed to Pan Am Railways, emerging as PAR 1 in an attractive solid blue scheme in 2010.

VIA RDC-1 No. 6133 drifts down bound mid day past the long abandoned former Canadian National Dundas Station. Built as DAR 9058 (Budd 7/1956) she would be among the longer serving RDC units on VIA, not be conveyed to IRSI in Moncton until 2011. T, H & B switchers No. 51 (NW-2; EMD January 1948) and No. 55 (SW-9; GMD December 1950) are shown performing their workaday duties at the Aberdeen Yard. Both are pioneering units; No. 51 the first T, H & B end cab switcher, No. 55 the first GMD built model on the roster. No. 51 was conveyed to Ontario Southland Railway in 1992 and is still resident in Salford, Ontario – see http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=10014. Following full acquisition of T, H & B by parent Canadian Pacific, No. 55 would depart the roster in 1988 and subsequently find work as an industrial switcher for a number of new owners – see http://www.thbrailway.ca. Note the detail differences between the two switcher models. Note also in the background on the right the massive concrete coal tower located at the Chatham Street locomotive service facility.

GO Transit GP40-2(W) No. 703 (built as No. 981 by GMD in December 1973) along with APU No. 801 (constructed as Northern Pacific F7B No. 6014B by EMD in 1951) deadhead eastward through Bayview Jct. with the usual compliment of bi-level coaches wrapping up the Friday evening commuter rush. Both units are still around; sold to Tri-Rail in Miami in 1991 No. 703 would eventually be acquired by Aberdeen, Carolina and Western while No. 801 would depart in 1994 to join her new owner as Ontario Northland No. 205.

Amtrak F40PH No. 346 (EMD 11/1980) powers through Bayview Junction at the head end of the Maple Leaf Limited with a nicely matched six car set of circular cross section Amfleet coaches. While the Maple Leaf lives on, albeit now powered by GE P42’s, sadly No. 346 does not. Sold to Larry’s Truck and Electric she would ultimately be dismembered and parted out.
