About RTCDave


I have been photographing trains since I was 15 years old back in nineteen seventy something. I have worked on the railway since 1979 starting at Conrail in Windsor, and have worked at both CP and CN. My first slide camera was my Dad's old Zenit-E (Russian POS with a sticky shutter). From there I went through a few Minolta SRT-201's and X-700's. I now use a Nikon D-60 which still works fine. I have started scanning slides using an Epson V550.

Most of my posts to date have been scanned K-64 slides, but with the pending take back of the Guelph Sub by CN I guess we wont be seeing this in Georgetown much longer. I was out playing with my new Nikon D3400. I posted this on FB with the caption "If you only shoot one train a day. One with a Tunnel Motor in the lead is acceptable". One day I'll have to go thru my California slides to see if I ever shot this unit on Cajon or at Tehachapi.

Three Canada Division GP9s (7432-7437-7434) lead a small WQST-1 off Westbound main and into the Class Yard lead at Howard Ave, Windsor Ont just before sunset on Sept 30th 1992. Normally, this train would arrive in Windsor early afternoon and would be back in St Thomas by this time. In the distance above the Eastbound main can be seen the signals at Pelton.

A short 1st Oakville job runs across the North Toronto Sub. After lifting at Lambton will head down the Canpa Sub and onto the CN Oakville Sub to switch customers at Burlington.

A trio of standard cab SD40's 5042-5082-5084 climbs the grade passing beneath the CP Belleville Sub just West of Beare Siding (Beare is now a spur as the West switch has been removed)

An as designed to operate (Engine on both ends) LRC set coasts through Hamilton Jct with VIA #72 on April 14th 1988 as a CN freight waits on the Cowpath to head West. Yes, the Cowpath is the actual track designation. If a train requires an authority or a Foreman gets a TOP, the CTC computer shows it as such.

Little did I know when I shot this No 75 starting up the Dundas Sub at Bayview, that one day I would dispatch this territory. Greg McDonnell once called this location "Canada's Hotspot" in a Trains article.

A C&O Canadian crew has borrowed a set of CP RS-18's to head over to West Detroit to rescue an outlawed C&O Puller. Before heading over, the crew had stopped in to the Penn Central Windsor Depot to chat with the Operator and somehow I ended up this day getting a ride over to West Detroit and back (I was only 15 when I shot this).
