Honest Ed's. During a charter on August 15, 2010, soon to be retired TTC 2345 (T6H-5307N, GMDD, 1982-1983) was posed by the famous store "Honest Ed's" with its 23,000 exterior light bulbs on Bathurst and Bloor in Toronto, Ontario as TTC CLRV 4036 (Hawker Siddeley, 1977–1981) passed by on the Route 511. From 1948-2016, this discount store served with slogans like "Not cheaper anywhere else in Toronto!", "Come in and get lost!" and "Only the floors are crooked!". Founder Ed Mirvish died in 2007, but the memory of him and his store are preserved in the neighborhood. Both the CLRV and ALRV fleet were retired by the end of 2019, making this scene now completely different. Examples of the legacy Hawker Siddeley streetcars are preserved at the Halton Radial, Illinois Railway, and Seashore Trolley Museums.

Smokin' Montreal Meet. On the afternoon of May 29, 2023, CPKC Canadian Pacific Train 112 with CP 8858 (ES44AC) as the outward facing DPU passes EXO Train 25, a Line 11/Vaudreuil bound 6-car train led by EXO 3003 at the Point-Claire Station in Montreal Quebec on warm afternoon of Monday, May 29, 2023. Some 10 miles (about 16 km) behind the trains in the background the 269 foot (82 meter) tall Roger-Gaudry Building at The University Of Montreal rises above the tree line. This is a great area to spend the rush hour as it is extremely busy for train traffic with EXO, VIA, CPKC, and CN all passing with good frequency.

Leg-In-Boot. British Columbia Electric Railway 1207 (BCER, 1905) was operating on the Vancouver Downtown Historic Railway in Vancouver, British Columbia on the afternoon of August 30, 2008. The car and cousin BCER 1231 were used during the warmer months on this line, owned by the City of Vancouver, as a historic operation between Granville Island and Leg-In-Boot Stations from 1998-2011. Interurban service in British Columbia ended in 1958. Ahead of hosting the Winter Olympics in 2010, service was suspended and the line was rebuilt to demonstrate operation of a pair of modern 5-section Bombardier Flexity Streetcars during the event to the Olympic Village, but were returned to the company without a purchase. The historic cars briefly returned in 2011, but ultimately the city shut down the line and the cars were transferred to the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society in Surrey, British Columbia in 2016, where both survive today.

la voie qu'on aime. VIA Rail Canada 909 (P42DC/EPA-42a) led train 669 (Montreal, QC-Toronto, ON) on the afternoon of May 29, 2023, seen crossing the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal approaching Bellevue Island, Montreal, Quebec. The 5 car-LRC train is lead by a P42 that is one that VIA wrapped in this advertising scheme, with English (love the way) on one side and French (la voie qu'on aime) on the other.

Urban Packing. On the morning of Monday, May 30, 2023, the Pointe-St-Charles switcher/Canadian National Railway Company 500 with CN 4731 (née-CN 5531, EMD, GP38-2/GR-20b, 4/1973) and CN 4903 (ex-GATX 2255, née-GTW 5809, EMD, GP38-2, 11/1971) are seen retrieving a covered hopper on the Turcot Holding Spur, South East, Montreal, Quebec, after dropping off 4 box cars for Kruger Packaging. This job travels bi-weekly out of the yard and down this short line, on this day utilizing these veteran EMDs. The conductor is talking to the engineer at Place Turcot just before the train returns to Pointe-St-Charles Yard.

The New Look Of VIA. On the morning of April 4, 2023, VIA Rail Canada Train 33 (Quebec City, QC-Ottawa, ON) was assigned a Siemens Venture train set, seen being led by Cab Car SIIX 2301 (consist: coaches 2901, 2801, 2701, 2601 and locomotive SCV-42 2202) as it departs Gare Central in Montreal, Quebec. VIA has ordered 32 of these train sets to equip its inter-city fleet. The tracks to the left of frame show the ongoing construction for the new REM (Réseau express métropolitain or Metropolitan Express Network) a fully automated light rail system that will significantly change the transit options in the Montreal area.

Peel Basin Looks Different. On April 4, 2023, Amtrak Train 68/Canadian National Railway Company 694 (Adirondack) was getting ready for its first departure from Gare Central in Montreal, QC with revenue passengers in over 3 years, this day with AMTK 108 (50th Anniversary/PhaseVI, P42SC) leading. The scene at Peel Basin near the St. Lawrence River in Montreal has changed dramatically in recent years, as the super structures on the bridge have been removed, a light rail line right of way is being put in place, and significant amounts of residential housing is under construction.

Repainted and Relighted. When former Canadian National Railway Company 6710 (Z-1a, General Electric, 1914) was retired from service in 1995, it was donated to the City of Deux Montagnes, Quebec, then the end of the Deux Montagnes Line. After sitting as a stationary display for a number of years, it became eroded by the elements. In 2019, it was moved to Parc Belair about a mile from that location. The locomotive was repainted and even the pantographs now reach upwards towards an invisible catenary again and the headlights and number board shine brightly at night, as seen on Monday, April 3, 2023. The line is currently closed while it is being reconfigured for light rail operation.

GO To Niagara Falls. GO Trasnit/Metrolinx MP40PH-3C (MPI) 640 was the power for Train 1977 on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, seen passing the junction at Clifton returning to Toronto after making its run from Toronto Union Station to Niagara Falls, Ontario. Ddaily GO Transit service to Niagara Falls via the GO Transit Lakeshore West line is used by a decent ridership. After VIA service here ended in 2012, the Amtrak/VIA Maple Leaf was the only regular passenger service here until September of 2019 when GO Transit committed to a regular schedule. Amtrak/VIA service has also returned, after a 26 month pause during pandemic related service cuts.

What Goes Up Must Come Down. With the prior day's run of the first Amtrak Maple Leaf (Train 63/VIA Rail Canada Train 98) returning to Toronto, Ontario for the first time since 2020, Amtrak 64/VIA Train 97 on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 was the first eastbound run. Amtrak 108 (P42DC, 50th Anniversary, Phase VI) was selected to lead the first full run to Toronto, which had been truncated between New York’s Penn Station and Niagara Falls, New York due to pandemic related service cuts. The train is seen passing through the Grimsby, Ontario VIA Station, a clear indication that it is not in the United States.

Welcome Back To Canada. For the first time since 2020, the Amtrak Maple Leaf (Train 63/VIA Train 98) returned to Toronto, Ontario on Monday, June 27, 2022. Due to a suspension related to the pandemic, service on the Maple Leaf had been operating between only between New York’s Penn Station and Niagara Falls, New York. For the occasion, Amtrak 108 (P42DC, 50th Anniversary, Phase VI) was selected to lead the first run. The train is seen at the end of the day with the CN Tower emerging from the Toronto, Ontario skyline, entering the VIA Toronto Maintenance Centre where it will spend the night before returning as Amtrak Train 64/VIA 97 the following morning.

On time in Ontario. Amtrak 63 (Maple Leaf)/ VIA Rail Canada 98 makes the extended station stop for customs and crew change in Niagara Falls, Ontario on the evening of Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Golden hour is just beginning as the train sits next to the station. The depot is a historic treasure, built in Victorian Gothic Revival style station for Great Western Railway in 1879.

Fortunately, CN 6711 (Z-1a) was on display at Exporail in Delson, Quebec on August 25, 2018. I was fortunate to have the privilege of riding behind these classics while they were still in service.

The Babbling Brook sits at the Toronto Maintenance Centre on the night of Tuesday, August 28, 2018 after arriving on Via Rail Train 98/Amtrak 63 (Maple Leaf). Although private cars can travel to Canada on all three Amtrak trains, they cannot go with Talgo Sets, leaving the Maple Leaf and the Adirondack as the only consistently viable options.

Gone but not forgotten, the Ontario Northland "Northlander" 1805 (GP38-2) leading, is approaching Union Station in Toronto, Ontario on 8/16/2010. The Northlander was discontinued on 9/28/2012. This view, from the Bathrhurst Street Bridge, is a classic railfan's spot, and was perfect for this warm summer morning.

<b>Heading to Halifax!</b> F40PH-2 6438 leads the REI-weekly VIA Rail Canada Train 14 (Ocean) is departing Gare Central in Montreal, QC heading to Halifax, NS on the evening of Friday, August 24, 2018. The “Renaissance Class” cars were built by Metropolitan-Cammell in 1995-1996, and number 139 in the VIA fleet. The towers used to carry catenary for Canadian National before it was cut back to Gare Central.

On February 16, 1993, STCUM control car 900 (Vickers, 1969) prepares to lead a commuter train from Gare Windsor in Montreal, Quebec. On April 23, 2021, after more than a decade of retirement, this car was donated to Exporail Canadian Railway Museum in Saint-Constant, Quebec, the only remaining example of this class of car.

<b>When you have the chance, GO.</b> Amtrak 63/VIA Rail Canada 98 (Maple Leaf) has just arrived at Union Station in Toronto, Ontario on the evening of Tuesday, August 28, 2018 with former New York Central Railroad Budd built Pullman obs/diner/sleeper "Babbling Brook" (WEBX 800007) holding the markers. Although the car would make a quick turn, presently Amtrak service to Canada is listed as "cancelled until further notice" due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions, and it is a reminder to not to take any rail travel for granted. A GO Transit car frames the scene and provides a reflection of the "New England States" tail sign.
