On their first fantrip together since the famed <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=48680><b>Tripleheader of May 1st 1960</b></a>, ex-Canadian Pacific steam engines 136 and 1057 (lettered "Credit Valley Railway" by owner Ontario Rail Association) operate on an ORA fantrip, stopped for a photo stop east of Fraxa Junction on the Owen Sound Sub. A switch stand can be seen by 1057 for a hydro siding, as the train is stopped adjacent to the HEPC (Ontario Hydro) Orangeville Transformer station just northwest of the town of Orangeville.<br><br>At the time the former CPR D10 1057 had been returned to steam through efforts at John Street roundhouse in the early 70's. 136 was fresh off being loaned for filming of "The National Dream" video series, and still sports much of its "old fashioned" makeover including lettering font style and placement (it would be <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47318><b>redone with CVR lettering in 1975</b></a>).<br><br><i>Gord Taylor photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

There's a bit of a delay at the busy intersection of Dundas Street W and Bay Street in downtown Toronto, as a very fresh looking TTC Ford C-series "line truck" makes emergency repairs to the overhead catenary in the middle of the intersection. TTC PCC 4270 (A3-class, CC&F 1942) pauses on an eastbound Harbord run with passengers leaning out of the windows to catch a glimpse of the delay, and a transit supervisor (or police officer?) chatting with the operator. Another PCC, possibly on a Dundas run to City Hall Loop, waits behind.<br><br>It's amusing to note that 70 years after this photo was taken, this block of commercial storefront buildings still exists mostly unchanged.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

TTC PCC 4115 (part of the original 4000-4139 A1-class PCC order, built by CC&F in 1938) climbs the grade up Bloor Street West at Mountview Avenue, just west of Keele, in August 1964. Construction on the original Bloor-Danforth subway line is well underway, marked in this photo by wood constuction scaffolding at Keele Subway station visible in the distance. This portion of the Bloor streetcar line (Keele to Jane Loop) would surive the initial Keele to Warden B-D subway opening in February 1966, but service would be discontinued in May 1968 and the tracks removed after the western extension to Islington station opened.

There's no shortage of cameras and Kodachrome out on this sunny day: fantrip attendees photograph TTC PCC 4589 taking the curve from southbound Mount Pleasant Avenue to westbound St. Clair Avenue East, during what was probably a farewell charter for the TTC's group of secondhand A10-class ex-Cincinnati PCC streetcars (TTC 4575-4601, built 1939-40). There's even one dedicated fellow with a smoke in hand while taking his photo.<br><br>Most of this series of streetcars were retired and shipped off to Egypt in the mid-late 1960's (they became redundant due to the Bloor-Danforth subway opening in 1966 and extension in 1968), but a few A10's like 4589 hung on into the early 70's until being retired (4589 was one of ten PCC's later sold to Tampico, Mexico, where it did run for a time). Streetcar service on Mount Pleasant wasn't far behind - despite TTC's early 70's decision to not scrap its streetcar network as previously planned, service on Mount Pleasant ended in late July 1976 and was replaced by trolleybuses.<br><br><i>Tom Gascoigne photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

CNE season is in full swing as GO Transit APCU 9862 trails a westbound Lakeshore line commuter train out of Exhibiton GO Station. Passengers make their way to the overhead pedestrian bridge to cross the tracks south to the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition, held seasonally every year for a few weeks in August-September), as others stand around having a smoke.<br><br>The train in on CN's busy Oakville Sub west of downtown Toronto in the industrial Liberty Village district. Visible to the north along the station platforms is a small yard (some references call it CN's Strachan Avenue yard), many old factory buildings, and some of the sidings and industrial leads. A Penn Central boxcar is spotted on the siding for Central Warehouse. The long industrial lead on the incline connects to the Mowat Avenue Lead, and curves north along the side of Mowat to more industrial sidings around Liberty Street (including for Toronto Carpet Manufacturing, and GE's lamp factory). Hustling westbound up the CN Dundas Sub at Mile 1, VIA F40PH-2 6410 leads a "J-train" of combined trains #77 and #51 (with 6417 tucked in halfway back), with no shortage of old blue and yellow ex-CN passenger cars trailing. Since the cars were steam-heated and the "new"(ish) F40's were HEP, ex-CN steam generator cars were needed to keep things warm onboard.
<br><br>
This photo was taken during the defective axle debacle that plagued VIA's LRC fleet and took it out of service at the time, necessitating a scramble to press old and borrowed equipment (notably some <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37586><b>GO consists</b></a>) into VIA service to pick up the slack. This included the old blue & yellow fleet, that VIA had opted not to upgrade/modernize with HEP after the 1990 VIA cuts and instead decided to retire and sell off.

CN SW900 7908 (leased by GMD London as a plant switcher at the time) switches around two new VIA F40PH-2's under construction at the north end of GMD's London plant at Oxford Street, both in an unpainted state still undergoing assembly. At the time, VIA's third order of F40's (6430-6458) was being built, and painted on the cab sides is the unit's sequence number in the order: "17" (for VIA 6446) and "19" (VIA 6448). The new units would help displace some of VIA's older aging secondhand power, notably the ex-CN FPA4/FPB4 units and FP9/F9B's (the upcoming VIA cuts in a few months probably didn't help either).

CP SW1200RS units 1269 and 1210 trundle eastbound through Oshawa on the Belleville Sub with a cut of hoppers and van, passing by the Albert Street overpass bridge on a wet, gloomy day trackside. They're about to cross the CN/Oshawa Railway diamond, and presumably enter the yard nearby.
<br><br>
As part of their 10-year motive power plan started in the early 80's, CP was rebuilding and upgrading their fleet of GMD SW1200RS units, and both units here are graduates. Lead unit 1269 is a relatively fresh rebuilt, formerly 8169 rebuilt in 1985. 1210 was rebuilt in 1981 from 8112. Upgrades included 645 power assemblies, upgraded electrical systems, new paint, etc, and a new 1200-series number. The lower-numbered 1200's lost transition, restricting them to maximum 35mph operation. The higher-up units retained transition for reaching normal 65mph speeds (that group was intended for roadswitcher service out east on the DAR).

The rebuild program's funding for the SW units was cut around mid-late 1985 after just half the fleet was rebuilt (apparently CP didn't need more little switchers), and going forward the remaining 8100's just received regular overhauls. 1269 eventually became slug 1022, and 1210 was sold off to Ontario Southland when CP finally culled the remaining units in the early 2010's.

CP GP35 5007 prowls the weedy <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47318><b>Saugeen Junction</b></a> with two Maine Central boxcars and a 434000-series van in tow, coming off the Owen Sound Sub onto the Walkerton Sub for the trip westward. The short train had come north from Streetsville Junction, and was enroute to Durham where the two MEC boxcars would be spotted at the ramp track in the yard, and another empty MEC boxcar would be lifted for the trip south. Dwindling branchline traffic would very soon doom the Walkerton Sub to abandonment in 1983-84, and the Owen Sound Sub to abandonment in 1995.<br><br>The track in the foreground is the wye track, spanning the north end between the Owen Sound and Walkerton Sub mainlines. Track diagrams note a few short storage tracks present off the Walkerton Sub inside the wye (probably disused by then, and hidden by the weed growth). Rolling through Brampton in the afternoon, VIA FPA4 6763 leads train #83 westbound over CN's Halton Sub at Peel interlocking (Kennedy Road), bound for its next station stop in downtown Brampton. It's entering single track territory, running the gauntlet between Peel (Kennedy Road) and Brampton East (Queen Street). The old ex-CN FPA4's, dating from the late 1950's but geared for 92mph and still used in mainline corridor passenger service, were on borrowed time as VIA didn't elect to upgrade them with new Reset Safety Control (RSC) equipment to replace their deadman pedals, as mandated by new Canadian regulations. All would be parked by March 1989 and sold off (the cabless FPB4's reportedly lasted until September). At last check, 6763 is stored on the Waldens Ridge Railroad in tattered VIA paint. <br><br> CN Peel was known for decades as the location where the Peel Village Industrial Lead branched off, built in the early 60's south to the American Motors (AMC) Brampton Assembly plant at Steeles & Kennedy (next to the surburban Peel Village neighbourhood). Peel had a number of yard, storage and runaround tracks used for storing autoracks and auto parts cars needed by the factory and other local industries. When the new Bramalea Assembly plant was built in the east end of town during the mid-80's, and when Chrysler took over AMC, the old Brampton Assembly plant shrunk in importance and was sold off for warehouse use in the early 90's. Peel interlocking was also relocated west from Kennedy Road to Centre Street in mid-late 2007, when double tracking of the line was underway.<br><br><i>Peter Jobe photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

When most people think of Alcos in Canada, they might think of Ontario Southland's collection, Cartier's fleet of big M's, VIA's passenger FPA4's, or the large fleets run by CN and CP, but a lot of secondhand Alcos migrated up from the states in the 60's-80's to Canadian shortlines, regionals and industrial operations.<br><br>Devco Railway of Glace Bay NS (formerly Sydney & Louisburg) acquired about a dozen secondhand Alco RS1 locomotives from Minneapolis & St. Louis and SOO Line in the early 60's, that served as their primary diesel power unit newer power (including GMD GP38-2's) sidelined most of them in the 80's. Here, Devco RS1 208 sits next to the coal tipple in Sydney Mines, NS in 1982. The two bay coal hoppers spotted nearby are lettered for DR and DRXX. The scalehouse and scale track are present in the foreground ahead of the unit (note the two sets of rails: one for cars being weighed, the other a scale bypass).<br><br>Devco RS1 208 began life as Minneapolis & St. Louis 946, built by Alco in August 1946, then renumbered 217, sold to S&L as their 208 in 1960, then becoming Devco 208. Ducking under Liverpool Road overpass, GO Transit GP40TC 9807 trails a westbound 3-car consist of Hawkers (with cab car 9855 leading) that has just departed Pickering GO Station, and is heading through the plant at "Liverpool" on CN's Kingston Subdivision.
<br><br>
As GO was still in its infancy, Pickering was the easternmost station on its initial Oakville-Pickering Lakeshore corridor, and the GO Sub didn't exist yet. The track branching off to the right on the incline is CN's York Sub, part of the "Toronto Bypass" project that helped divert CN freight traffic around Toronto and made a new GO commuter service possible.

In the 1980's, the TH&B's motive power situation was getting dire due to reliability issues with its small fleet of aging first generation diesels. Parent CP Rail was often lending 4-axle power including RS18, C424, and leased B&O GP38 units. Here, CP RS18's 8733 and 8791 lead TH&B GP9 401, NW2 51 and SW9 57 in a mix of 251 and 567 noise as they climb "the mountain" out of Hamilton with a heavy rock train, seen here at Dewitt Road on the ascent to Vinemount. The two switchers were some of the only ones in the fleet equipped with MU, so were often seen working mainline trains with TH&B's Geeps and leased CP power. In a few more years, motive power officials with CP would retire the TH&B's fleet of switchers, and have the Geeps (most ended up stored <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=1564><b>out of service at John Street</b></a> upon major failure) rebuilt as fresh <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46873><b>CP 1680-series GP7u</b></a> and GP9u yard units.

On what appears to be a humid August day, CP SW1200RS 8124 passes through West Toronto with a short local or transfer freight, curving around the southwestern quadrant of West Toronto on the Galt Subdivision after coming north from the Parkdale area, and heading west towards West Toronto/Lambton Yards. This was taken looking south from the old vantage point of Old Weston Road overpass (partially visible on the right), that was closed off to traffic and eventually demolished during the 1980's. It was long a popular train-watching spot dating back to the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16093><b>steam era</b></a>.
<br><br>
Most of the train appears to be double door 40' boxcars (popular for lumber use), as well as a pair of PGE 50' combo-door boxcars. A wooden van brings up the rear past the platforms of West Toronto Station (demolished in the early 80's by CP while the City of Toronto was trying to have it designated with heritage protection status). The old parking lot and crane track are visible north of the station. In the background, notable buildings include Penfound Varnish (mural obscured by trees to the left), Viceroy Rubber at Dupont (middle), Tower Automotive (lone office tower in the middle background), and The Crossways Mall apartment towers (right). Some of this scene has remained the same, but much has changed dramatically.

TTC PCC 4384 operates on an eastbound Carlton run, diverting southbound over Parliament Street between Carlton and Gerrard. The streetcar is passing a row of Victorian-era houses home to Wayne Furniture, at the time celebrating its 45th birthday.
<br><br>
From some <a href=https://thecjn.ca/perspectives/from-the-archives-family-business/><b>research online</b></a>, it appears Wayne Furniture stated off selling Radios as the Wayne Radio Company at 446 Parliament Street in 1944. It was opened by Max Wainberg and his sons, and operated through three generations of the family. Other information on the business is hard to find, but it appears they may have closed down sometime in the 90's or early 2000's.

A trio of CN "Railiner" Budd RDC's with RDC-1 6114 trailing accelerate through Port Credit station, eastbound on the Oakville Sub crossing over the Hurontario Street underpass heading eastbound bound for Toronto.
<br><br>
A CP local freight is visible in the distance switching nearby, utilizing
interswitching rights over the CN Oakville Sub (that CP had running rights over to Hamilton Junction).

As well as the triple track mainline, there were a few service tracks, siding, storage and team tracks here at <a href=http://jpeg2000.eloquent-systems.com/toronto.html?image=ser12/s0012_fl1971_it0020.jp2><b>Port Credit</b></a>. A spur branched off south (out of view) to the old St. Lawrence Starch plant in Port Credit (demolished in the mid-90's).

Just visivle on the left was the old "shed track" that used to run behind the old CN Port Credit station to the freight shed beside it. The station was demolished sometime around 1973-75 (fell out of favour due to new GO facilities maybe?) and this became a team track.

Canadian Wheat Board covered hopper CNWX 100807 sits with two very new CNWX 390000-series "Single Wheat Sheaf" cars on the siding to the Marmill Feeds mill in downtown Markham, opposite the station and CN's Uxbridge Subdivision. Scenes like this hearken to times not too long ago when areas like Markham were rural communities rather than bedroom commuter suburbs of the GTA. Farmers would come into town with their haul of grain to drop off at the local town elevator, that would in turn load it into strings of boxcars or covered hoppers spotted on the siding for transport to domestic market customers or the ports for export.
<br><br>
Today instead of farmers bringing grain downtown, commuters flock in from the neighbourhoods that were once farmer's fields. Marmill Feeds would last into the mid-late 90's before the mill and other buildings on this property were cleared for a housing development and more GO Transit commuter parking. A nearby street bears the name "Marmill Way", hinting at the area's past.

"Cab rides" on a steam engine? Normal back in 1959: some railfans participating on a Buffalo NRHS chapter fantrip over Canadian Pacific in southern Ontario are treated to an up-close experience of the signs, sounds and smells of steam, seen here riding the tender and cab area of CP D10h 1092 as her and sister 1098 head north out of <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47339><b>Orangeville</b></a> to wye their train at Fraxa Junction. Upon wying, the train will head back down the Owen Sound Sub to Orangeville in preparation for the trip back down the Orangeville Sub to Streetsville Junction. It's hard to pin down the exact location, but the train appears to be approaching Centre Street crossing near the north end of town, with a few trackside onlookers in the distance.
