While waiting for this train to arrive a motorist at the nearby crossing was kind enough to warn of us of bears that had been spotted in the area coming down from the mountains and to be vigilant!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_9222-200x150.jpg)

![VIA #693, formerly known as the Hudson Bay, at Thompson, Manitoba.
The train is actually make a reverse movement to reach the wye located just outside of town where all passenger trains are turned for their return trip along the Thompson Sub.
Train time at Thompson can be a busy scene as both the north and south bound passenger trains are due in around the same time. On this day #693 arrived first and after detraining pulled past the station to the end of track to allow #690 access to the station platform. The southbound came and went first and after it had completed its wye movement it was the northbound's turn. After the train pictured had been turned it will back to the depot and board passengers for the true remote stretch of the line north to Churchill.
The three to four hour Thompson layover provides an excellent opportunity to take in some of the eclectic operations and equipment of the Hudson Bay Railway. This line is a true gem and by far the most interesting experience VIA offers.
Also this photo is indeed level, it is the track that is off!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_8198-copy-200x150.jpg)

![The NOT for sale signs were hot off the press and freshly applied Easter weekend a little over 2 weeks after the announcement. GP38-2 1802 is one of the first units to wear the stop sign and it soon will take the train #122 south as another run as the Northlander. On March 21st I had booked two nights accommodation at the station Inn and was eagerly anticipating my first trip to Cochrane, having only been from Toronto to North Bay by train at that point. Two days later on March 23rd, 2012 the provincial government announced the divestment of the ONTC.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/IMG_8988-copy-200x150.jpg)

This equipment will layover until it is picked up by the next northbound train. 6456 and the rest of the now five car consist cools its heels on the main track and will head south to Winnipeg shortly once servicing and a crew change is complete. ![Ontario Northland Railway's iconic Polar Bear Express sits at Moosonee waiting to head south to Cochrane. This operation boasts the distinction of being Ontario's only mixed train and one of few remaining in Canada. Although the Northlander trains have made their final runs as part of the ONTC divestment process, it has remained clear that the Polar Bear will continue to operate year round. Until such time as a road is built, this essential service will continue to function as the lifeline Moosonee and points north.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/IMG_1076-copy-200x150.jpg)

![At the end of Hudson Bay Railway's Herchmer Subdivision lies Churchill, Manitoba. At left VIA's Hudson Bay sits at the station having wye'd before it's arrival with passengers on board. The passenger train will head south later in the evening. On the right is the recently arrived general mixed freight train from Thompson which has likely made several stops along the way. This train carried a 1919 vintage heavyweight combination coach/baggage until late 2000 painted in VIA colours. The true mixed train status was finally dropped with all passengers being accommodated on VIA #692 and #693. The headlight seen behind is GATX 2683 and its crew waiting to resume their duties of switching grain cars to be off-loaded at the nearby port destined for export to foreign markets.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/IMG_5590-copy-200x150.jpg)

![Retired in late 2001, LRC Locomotive #6917 was given a new lease on life during the summer of 2010 when it was saved from the scrapper's torch by efforts from the Toronto Railway Historical Association. The unit currently sits at VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre where it is lovingly worked on by a dedicated team of volunteers. The eventual plan is to have the locomotive cosmetically restored and in operating condition, potentially in service on a tourist line. See: http://www.trha.ca/LRC/ for more information.
