<b>CN Guelph Sub, Day 1:</b> With GEXR (mostly) gone CN tries to get into the daily routine on the Guelph Sub. 542 (formerly GEXR 582) enters Guelph off of the Fergus Spur. The power, which I believe to be parker in Guelph from now on, was on this occasion tied up in Preston (I assume, my only evidence of this was the snow on the rails). 542 would back onto the main then go up onto the North Spur with this cut of cars to “clear the tracks”.

<b>Out for a Spin.</b> After dropping 30 or 40 cars off for SOR 2301 at IOL, SOR 3404 and 2500 bare down on Haldmand Road 3 on the way to Stelco’s Nanticoke works to drop off a few empty coil cars.

After making their way down the grade into Hamilton (presumably dumping ballast somewhere between here and Guelph Jct.) the crew member gives me a sinister stare while rounding the west leg of the wye. After clearing the switch below me the crew would back the train around the east leg of the wye onto the Hamilton Sub. They then proceeded North, returning to Guelph Jct (with 8910 hot on his heals) and then into Toronto presumably to reload the train with ballast. To me this unique operation and consist is somewhat of a throwback to when CP was running the training train in Southern Ontario. I'm hoping that continuing maintenance on the Hamilton Sub will mean at least a few more trips like this one. Time will tell.

<b>Bridge over the river Red Hill.</b> A nice pair of golden rodents fly over the Red Hill Valley Parkway/Creek after dropping a string of coil cars and American Iron and Metal scrap gons at Kinnear. I attempted to chase the train up to Vinemount but the two AC-4400's coupled (excuse the pun...) with a short train made quicker work of the Niagara Escarpment then I did.

<b> Ain't no sunshine when she snows.</b> After chasing the Belt Line job from the North end my last location was here at Gage and Main st. I've always wanted to catch this job here but the opportunity has alluded me for some time. A few weeks prior <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32111">Stephen Host caught the same job</a> a few crossings north of this location. Note the "sandwiched" engine (in both shots) was CP 7307, an ex-D&H gp 38-2 easily distinguished by it's red frame stripe. Interestingly the orientation of the engine has reversed, which likely happened when they changed the third engine (currently gp 38-2 3118).

After doubling his 30 ish car train north out of the yard, then having backed it down the east leg of the wye to face the right directing, the not orange LLPX 2236 powers out of Guelph solo on route back to Kitchener. I’m wondering if anyone can shine some light on the Big Thing on two heavy weight flat cars. They appear to have been setting up the area surrounding the cars for trans loading it.

CN 550 is sitting on the connecting track at Hamilton (CN Stuart) after doing a some switching in the yard. They would depart eastbound on the Grimsby sub, presumably to switch Parkdale. 422 would go by a little over an hour later. 550 would then return a few hours after 422 and switch the west end of Stuart Street yard before returning to Aldershot. Note the weird, foggy weather over the lack, which remained there for much of the afternoon while not impeding all the sunshine here.

<b>Something's missing...</b> I haven't had the chance to go out recently and my dad's been scanning some of my old slides for me so I thought this would be a good opportunity to do a "memories Monday" (somehow I doubt that'll catch on). Not a lot of info I have on this shot. Westbound autorack train with CN 2551 and BNSF 6791 in control. The noteworthy aspect is the building of the third main as part of GO's expansion into Hamilton. It amazes me that this was 11 years ago when I was at the young and unknowing age of 9 years old. A lot's sure changed since then with GO's further expansion into Hamilton via Harbour West. Will be a nice addition once they finish the station next century.

<b>Passing Counterparts.<b/> I find it really cool that I was able to catch a meet between opposing trains 384 and 385, each with opposite origins and destinations. I also like that each had an ex. BCRail engine in the consist as if to emphasis the idea that one train was the mirror image of the other. The consist for 384 included CN 3003, CN 3015 and ex BCOL 4612 while the consist for 385 included CN 2719, ex BCOL 4644 and CN 8838.

<b>Lean(ing) EMD's.<b/> A nice pair of EMD's guide 148 through the curve at Copetown, starting the grade down to Bayview at a nice and easy 15 MPH (ish). A couple of miles behind 148 is 384 lined to follow 148 downgrade after working Paris.

Despite it's overall appearance, I think 4774 as pictured above was recently out-shopped believe it or not. A keen eye will note the trucks have a fresh coat of black paint on them with little weathering, there are shiny glad-hands dangling off the pilot, in addition to new digits on the number boards, striping and patch paint in certain places (for example where the window face, nose roof and side meet. Also, there's a chalk arrow pointing to this location with the word "crack" next to it. I can only assume they re-welded the seems and patch painted over it).

Marcus Stevens caught this<a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=28489"> duo yesterday in Milton </a>. Marcus noted, and I completely agree, that this unit needs a new paint job. However my thinking is that CN is extremely unlikely to repaint the zebra strips on the engine. So do I want fresh paint or faded stripes? I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this.

The fog and CN 8012 simultaneously roll into Aldershot on a dreary Friday afternoon. The train 371, one I'm not too familiar with, is a unit autorack train 94 cars long. I initially thought that the crew dimmed the ditch lights for me to help with the photo quality, which brought a smile to my face. However when 148 went by on track 2 seconds later I realised it probably wasn't for me!

On a side note, CN and GO were having a rough day. A power outage somewhere cause a great deal of both dispatching systems to go down for over an hour, causing huge delays. Things seemed to be back to normal at the time of this photo, however when I was topping up my Presto card in the station there was a gentleman attempting to get compensation for having to wait an hour at Union.

<b>Drag race to Oakville.</b> Today I had some time to kill in the Oakville area so I thought I’d take advantage of the opportunity, despite the weather. I’ve always wanted to try this shot taken from the top level of the GO parking garage, but never had the reason to be in the area until now. Great angle and vantage point, at least in my opinion, especially if there’s something specific you want to catch (Like an L-10-L set or the Oakville Geeps heading to Aldershot or whatever). The great view makes it one of the better places to wait if need be. Here I was lucky enough to catch two westbounds entering the station. This is the first time I’ve ever gotten two GO trains side by side going the same direction, the train on the right terminates at Oakville, where the crew changes ends and heads back to Toronto.

Go cab car 303, the only car in the new paint design in this consist, brings up the rear of the departing 5:15 at West Harbour. Above the train the west end station bridge stands, still under construction (along with most of the station). In the background are some tank cars of interest under reporting mark DPRX, seen with the very noticeable white tank heads. DPRX stands for Deep Rock Refining Company, who has these cars to haul crude oil. The cars seen in this photo though are in asphalt service. A sign of the times. With the recession hitting the oil industry car demands are way down. So companies are either storing cars or leasing them out for use with different commodities, like we see here. Taken from the Harbour West parking lot. (Thanks for the info Peter)

It’s not too often that I see SOR in Hamilton using a pair of switchers in the yard, verses just a standalone engine. It would’ve been really nice if, instead of 3840, they used the two ex. SP GP-9’s together, but I like that this consist is reminiscence of the “rainbow” days before G&W. It was obvious that both engines were needed by the effort required to move this string. At the time of this photo they were backing onto a cut of cars on the first track, which started roughly at the American Iron and Metal (AIMX) scrap gons you can see. Once they pulled the cut there was 20 or maybe 30 + cars in tow. Over on the left you can see the west staircase and elevator allowing (once construction is complete) access to the only operating platform at GO Harbor West (or is it West Harbour? I can never remember). I’m standing directly beside the eastern elevator which is also under MacNab St. I was kinda forced to stand under the bridge as it was raining at the time, but anything to get the shot! (Please note that I was a fare paying customer on GO at this time and the fences along the platform are only about 4’ tall, making them easily accessible to shoot over by legal means)

I seem to have a theme going here with this being my second GO shot, but “when in Rome” I guess. Here GO 308 (just happened to be the same cab car as my last shot) is westbound at Oakville station. Over on the right you can see the eastbound counterpart sitting at the platform. This, by the way, is GOes almost complete set of equipment in the new two-toned green scheme. A week or so ago the accessibility couch was switched out for one in the old paint.

Westbound GOT 308 begins to lean into the curve around the platform at Bronte station. I didn’t notice until post-processing but the conductor gave me a friendly wave, a little different than the perplexed look I usually get from most GO crews while taking photos. One thing to note, in the bottom left you can see the scorched wild grass. In the previous week or two (or more, can’t remember specifically) the regular Oakville-Aldershot (CN 5 something, something) turn passed by the vacant field while throttling up, throwing sparks to the wind igniting the extremely dry grass (this was during heat wave). It was a pretty intense fire and went right up to the edge of the GO parking lot, and most likely would’ve damaged cars had the fire department not been there.

<b>Night time in Brantford</b><br>Tonight I guess the crew decided to park the GP in a much more convenient location for me, as seen above. I didn't hesitate to take advantage of this. I don't ever recall ever seeing the yard power tied down here, but CN seems to be shaking things up (at least from my perspective) a little in the area. For example taking a set of GP's out of London, and I saw a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIzn21i_3TY) where 4770 on 580 went all the way to Woodstock earlier in the week. Maybe they're using this one more so the don't bother parking it in the usual spot? Don't mistake this for complaining though!!<br>Also tonight, you can see 435's SBU over to the left. On the way over I heard on the scanner that the lead unit (2293, I think) was having a lot of brake issues. I understand that the engineer couldn't control the brakes properly from this unit. He ended up isolating the lead unit completely, meaning he was controlling the train from the second cab, while the conductor acted as the eyes in the lead cab. The original plan was to use this set up to Paris where they'd leave the lead unit and continue on their mary way to London. However the plan changed to the crew tying down the entire train at Paris and calling it a day. Bet that'll screw up some plans for tomorrow!!

I've learned to appreciate the irony in the fact that the first time I’ve had a chance to be trackside in a few weeks, it happens to also be one of the coldest days of the year. But, for the most part, this didn't hinder my mission to do some railfanning.
I started off the afternoon on the Bay St. bridge in Hamilton, where the cold basically shut down my camera, and later on ended up at Brantford waiting for the Via. While in Hamilton I heard the dispatcher talking to the Aldershot crew, telling them about the “confusion and delay” type of day he was having. It started off with, “422 broke a knuckle 16 cars from the rear of a 10,000’ train”. I saw 422 at 3:03 pm cruising at 28 mph past Hamilton (CN Stuart), when a lot of the time he’s through Hamilton in the early morning. The dispatcher went on to say that 384 stalled going up the hill at Scotch Block, just west of Georgetown. A pair of GeePs went over to push them up the hill, when the head end proceeded to run out of gas! Last I heard a set of power was sent to the rescue.
Anyways, back to the location at hand. While waiting for the Via (65 minutes late by the way: kudos to Via) CN 399 went by with a pair of GE’s “DPUed” in the train, which may or may not be significant, but it was cool. Then the Via came and I tried a “ghost” type of shot (don’t know what else to call it) of the head end pulling into the frame and (hopefully) stopping perfectly inside the frame (this one was close enough-well, I’ll let you be the judge of that). Stay warm out there!

This shot is kinda bitter - sweet for me. After catching OSR working the south spur a few times I thought I'd get ahead of them leaving town and catch them at John Galt park adjacent to the River Run Centre. When I got there I linen up my shot and I thought "Well I probably have time, let's go check out the GHRA caboose", which I believe is stored just around the corner behind the River Run Centre. So I started walking and then I saw the lights coming around the bend. A few choice works came to mind which I cannot share, then I went back as far as I could and took the above shot. To add insult to injury the sun came out just as the cab of 8235 was about to exit the shadow of an apartment building. What would have added significantly to the shot I had planned, went to emphasised that I was on the dark side of the train. Well, the way I choose see it, any day with OSR is a good day. I'm sure pretty much everybody has been in a similar scenario at least once! Hope you enjoy! Mark
