Road, rail, and trail users all share space at John Galt Park in downtown Guelph, named after the City's founder, and located mere feet away from where the city was founded on April 23, 1827. Goderich Exeter Railway 582 has finished its work in the north end of Guelph and is returning south alongside the River Run Centre and CNR 6167, whose tender has just been prepped for application of the CNR 'Maple Leaf' herald.<br><br>These grounds on the shore of the Speed River have played host to railway history for over 135 years. With the building of the Guelph Junction Railway in 1887 (leased to the CPR), Guelph's first building and John Galt's home, known as <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/photo/C181DF06-AFEB-40BB-82A4-989540973427>"The Priory,"</a> was converted for use as a railway station. A purpose it would serve until 1911 when a brick station was built further north at Eramosa Road. The Priory would be removed during the 1920s and the railyard expanded. After the 1988 abandonment of the CPR Goderich Subdivision north of Guelph, use of the yard diminished and much of it was removed during the early 1990s leaving the mainline, passing track, <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=29496>and the CPR freight shed.</a> The unique stone facade of the shed, originally built in 1882 as the Speed Skating Rink, and <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/photo/F4743B03-ACE8-4F08-99E7-812312363734>suffering a large fire in May 1991,</a> remains today nestled amongst the trees behind 6167. The mainline was removed during the late 90s, replaced with the Downtown Trail/Trans Canada Trail, and the passing track assumed the role of the main.

CN L568 gets underway after working Nachurs Alpine and Pestell at New Hamburg. They will setoff cars at customers in Shakespeare and Masterfeeds in Stratford before turning back for Kitchener.

<b>"It'll cut through snow as high as the headlight!"</b> The CP Goderich wayfreight, ordered at Hamilton Chatham Street, generally saw various models of GMD and MLW road switchers assigned as power over the years, but during the harsh winter months an F-unit often made an appearance. Longtime wayfeight engineer Donald Broadbear regularly requested this power to cut through the heavy lake effect snowdrifts of Perth and Huron Counties. Here, the wayfreight switches cars at the Goderich Elevators before returning home to Hamilton. Note the Maitland River trestle in the distance, which the train will cross upon departing the yard.<br><br>Well known in railway circles for his knowledge of steam locomotives, Don Broadbear passed away earlier this week on February 21, 2023, weeks after his 92nd birthday. He and his father, Percy, owned the Pinafore Park Railway in St. Thomas where many got their start in railway preservation. Don was also a founder of the Port Stanley Terminal Railway, the Ontario Southland Railway, took on the task of restoring and operating Essex Terminal 0-6-0 number 9 as part of the Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society (SOLRS/St. Thomas Central Railway), and later at the Waterloo Central Railway. <br><br>Don's obituary <a href=https://www.arbormemorial.ca/forestlawn/obituaries/donald-broadbear/99868?fbclid=IwAR3-p5giyTU00P_pDqzvFNbj2uO6No36sHeWVnDOkX5OyfRgfWs5vZHUyWA>can be found here.</a><br><br><i>Rob Bondy Photo, Jacob Patterson Collection.</i>

CNR 6167 makes its way west over East Catfish Creek at New Sarum nearing the halfway point of its excursion at St. Thomas.<br><br>Originating at Toronto Union Station, the excursion ran to Hamilton where a pair of MLW RS3s; 3004, 3019, were added ahead of 6167 to assist the train up the Hagersville Subdivision to Caledonia, even though the 800 ton consist came in well under the 1,400 ton haulage capacity for Northerns up the grade. The diesels would be removed at Caledonia, the tender replenished with water, and the excursion would depart for Jarvis with a couple of runpasts along the way at Caledonia and Garnet, captured <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47268>here by Bob Sandusky.</a> Further runpasts would be held along the Cayuga west of Jarvis before arriving at St. Thomas <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=44906> where Doug Page captured the train </a> before it turned for home.<br><br><a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51043>Westbound approaching the Humber River at Toronto,</a> John Freyseng Photo.<br><br><i>Original Photographer Unknown, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.</i>

Sitting cold and quiet, her fire last dropped 58 years ago, CNR 6167 looks right at home in John Galt Park. The 6167 Restoration Team, a part of Guelph Museums', has been slowly working away since the Northern was moved to this site <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43392>in November 2020.</a> Work has included coupling the locomotive and tender together, including moving the tender by hand; reinstalling the driving box cellars; reinstalling grease pans in trailing truck journals; and finally adding the CNR herald to both sides of the tender. 6167 is planned to be fully repainted in the next year or two, and the city will be installing a hydro hookup for continued restoration.<br><br>For anyone in on it... benches at right :)

As it was mentioned in the comments on <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50889>John Freyseng's shot of 5107,</a> here is a shot of the joint Upper Canada Railway Society and Canadian Railroad Historical Association trip behind E-10-a 2-6-0 90 and N-4-a 2-8-0 2649 at Bancroft.<br><br>Departing Belleville amid the light rain that morning at 0645h - with a crew from the National Film Board setup in the baggage car - the excursion ran along the Campbellford Subdivision to <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46380>Anson Junction,</a> taking the east leg of the wye onto the Maynooth Subdivision. The train would pause briefly at Bancroft before proceeding three miles north to York River where the train could be wyed for the return trip. Arriving back at Anson Junction, the excursion would continue south into Trenton, turning on the wye before returning north to Trenton Junction to rejoin the Oshawa Sub mainline for the short twelve mile run back to Belleville. The special reached a top speed of 55mph on the high iron, running barely 30 minutes ahead of Toronto - Montreal train 6, due into Belleville at 1815h.<br><br>Notes of the trip per John Freyseng's extensive article in the June 1959 UCRS newsletter. Niagara, St. Catharines & Toronto Railway express motor 41 runs northbound passing the Thorold Water Works on the elevated tracks at Front and Regent Streets. Shop tracks at Spadina are filled with first generation motive power, including a pair of recently rebuilt CN RS18ms in their patched green and gold scheme. Six RS18s (3850, 3856, 3860, 3883, 3884, 3887) received Cummins head end power (HEP) units in their short hoods in addition to dual control stands during 1967 rebuilding for Tempo service in southern Ontario. The well known <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=10915>orange and white Tempo scheme</a> and their new numbers would be applied late in the spring of 1968. CN 3883 became <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=7103>CN 3151</a> while CN 3860 became <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=19632>CN 3153.</a> Both of these units would lose their HEP equipment in a fatal wreck at Woodbine on the Weston Sub <a href=https://digitalarchive.tpl.ca/objects/360627/smashed-and-tangled-wreckage-of-drailed-cnr-tempo-train-lie?ctx=1f0a25be3641771b0538699746a9f47931d8bfd1&idx=20>in April 1969</a> requiring them to use baggage cars equipped with HEP equipment for their trains.<br><br>With Tempo coaches beginning to arrive during spring 1968, employees were given two round trip introductory runs on <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=28214>Sunday, June 9, 1968</a> between Toronto and London before service began on Monday, June 17. Tempo equipment would initially be assigned to trains 147/142 running Toronto – Windsor, and trains 151/150 running Toronto – Sarnia. Wednesday, July 10 would expand the equipment to Windsor trains 141/146.
