Growing up near CN Guelph Junction, I've always been interested in railways. Began photography around 2013 with a few Nikon point and shoot cameras, now using a D3200. A one time only occasion, CN GP9s 4533, 4579 and RS18 3104 lead a unit acid train along Ferguson Avenue, destined to the TH&B interchange. Per discussion with TH&B historian Lance Brown, this move is remembered by several TH&B pensioners, though the exact reason for the move cannot be recalled. On arrival at the interchange, the train was lined straight into Kinnear, where the CN power cut off, grabbed their van off the tail, and proceeded back to the interchange and onto home rails.<br><br>Generally, these CIL acid trains had an all CP routing from Copper Cliff or Falconbride to Hamilton, where the TH&B would take the trains for delivery to Niagara Falls or Port Maitland. With their <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=49981>work at HCL complete,</a> CN L568 is a straight shot home to Kitchener across the southern Ontario farmlands. The still waters of Trout Creek reflect a calm scene as the train passes high above.

A fine spring day finds OSR 8235 on the Woodstock Job returning west towards Ingersoll. A number of cars loaded with steel beams will be left here in the Beachville siding for later delivery to the Ingersoll transload near CAMI.

CNR 1368 sits on the Beeton siding with mixed train M391 for Collingwood, while train 661 from Hamilton pulls up to the 1888 Northern & North Western station en route to Allandale. Once a significant point on the H&NW/N&NW Railway as the junction between the mainline to Allandale and the branch to Collingwood via Alliston, Beeton once hosted a roundhouse, turntable, coal tower (still visible above train 661 in this shot), and water facilities. The roundhouse and turntable were replaced with a wye towards the end of the Grand Trunk era used for turning locomotives off the branchline train.<br><br>Shortly, train 661 will be underway, with M391 following about five minutes behind up to Allimil, roughly 1.5 miles north of Beeton. Originally called Beeton Junction, the name Allimil (junction between the CN's Milton and Alliston Subs) appeared during the CNR era, likely in 1936 after the stretch between Beeton and the junction was reduced from double track to a single main.<br><br>CN's Milton Sub was reorganized in 1965 as part of the Toronto bypass project, with the Georgetown - Burlington section becoming part of the new Halton Subdivision. North of Georgetown the line became known as the Beeton Sub. The Alliston Sub would be split in two with the Alliston - Creemore section abandoned in 1955. The northern section between Lake Junction at Collingwood and Creemore would be abandoned in 1960, with the southern portion near Alliston allocated to the Beeton Sub as the Alliston Spur. Abandonment of the Beeton Sub would commence in 1975 starting with Georgetown - Cheltenham, followed by Cheltenham - Beeton in 1984. Rails were removed from Cheltenham - Tottenham by 1986, and all remaining trackage north was considered part of the Beeton/Alliston Spurs until final abandonment in 1989. Today, this scene is now a housing subdivision, but the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=24769>South Simcoe Railway</a> still operates a handful of times each year between Tottenham and the south end of Beeton (Main Street).<br><br>Further information can be found in two books by the late Charles Cooper; <i>Rails to the Lakes,</i> and <i>Hamilton's Other Railway.</i> Both very informative.<br><br>On October 24, 1965, Doug Page captured a Toronto - Allandale <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35091>UCRS excursion at Beeton</a> running north on the Beeton Sub, and returning south to Toronto on the Newmarket.<br><br><i>Original Photographer Unknown, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.</i>

Beneath the order boards atop Huntsville's 1924 CN station, Mac Yard - North Bay freight A451 crawls to a stop to make a setoff of local traffic and ballast cars. Local L595, powered this day by CN 4762, will begin breaking up the setoff shortly after 451's departure, before servicing nearby industries.

The old Hamilton & North Western Railway line through Vine, Ontario still sees a train pass by twice per week as the Barrie Collingwood Railway’s GP9 1001 works down the Beeton Sub to industries at Innisfil and back through Barrie to Utopia. The circa 1918 Grand Trunk Railway station at Vine still remains just a few hundred feet down the road from the line it once served. After the last passenger train in 1960, it was relocated in 1962, and once again wears GTR grey and green in its new role as a residence.<br><br>CCGX 1001 is returning north from Innisfil with two cars from Comet Chemical, one from Tarpin Lumber, and a fourth car for TAG Environmental at Barrie.

Approaching the town of Elmira, Waterloo Central's GMD-1 1012 shoves its short passenger train through the farm fields of Woolwich Township. Shortly they will return south to the St. Jacob's Market before returning to the shop at St. Jacob's.

Earlier this year CP ran a CWR train along the Galt Sub dropping rail in various locations before continuing south down the Hamilton Sub. While working their way east, the consist was left tied down on the Killean Storage Track on Galt's east side one evening giving local photographers the opportunity for night shots of the London-built SD40-2. With the time change 'springing ahead' during the night, I was afforded an extra hour of darkness in the morning, with just enough time to grab a few shots after work before the sun came up.

Closing in on seventy years since this scene was captured, Montreal & Southern Counties interurban car 602, built by National Steel Car in 1913, sits on the station track at Marieville while Canadian National train 705 from Granby led by CLC H-10-64 7615 pulls away from the station (note order board above coaches) at 14:35h bound for Montreal.<br><br>Passenger service over the Granby Sub was nearing an end by this time. Originally constructed by the Montreal, Portland & Boston Railway during the 1870s, and operated under the South Eastern Railway name, the line began service in 1877 between Longueuil and Felighsburg via Marieville and Farnham. The line came under control of the Central Vermont in 1891. The CV would later come under control of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1896. The Montreal & Southern Counties Railway, founded 1897 and under GTR ownership in 1906, consisted of two divisions; the Suburban and Interurban. The Interurban Division ran east out of Montreal to Marieville and on to Granby, plus a branch from Marieville to Sainte-Angele-de-Monnoir with service opening to Marieville in September 1913. The line would open to Granby in 1916, and the branch in 1926. Electric operations would be cut back from Granby in 1951 seeing electric operations terminate at Marieville. In their place, trains of conventional CNR equipment would operate via Marieville to Granby. The M&SC's final run over the Interurban Division would take place on October 13, 1956, with the Suburban Division closing the following day. CNR passenger service was down to one train each way per day by the end of the decade, ending April 29, 1961 as the new timetable came into effect the following day. The <a href=http://www.cwrailway.ca/cnrha.ca/Timetables/St%20Lawrence%20Region/Montreal%20Division/Granby%20all.pdf>Granby Sub (1978 timetable)</a> remained in service until 1994 when CN received permission to <a href=https://otc-cta.gc.ca/eng/ruling/116-r-1993>abandon the line from Marieville to Granby.</a> The remainder of the branch from Marieville to the junction with the Rouses Point Sub at Castle Gardens would follow not long after. <br><br>The 7615 was part of a 1951 order to CLC for eighteen 1200hp units numbered 7600 - 7617, with the last three being equipped with steam generators in the short hood. They were similar to their American Fairbanks-Morse counterparts (H-10-44) however the Canadian units were built with A-1-A trucks, designated H-10-64. A second order was placed for twelve units (H-12-64s) numbered 7618 - 7629, delivered between 1952 and 1953. These units would all be renumbered in 1956 to the 1600 series, with 7615 becoming 1615. All would be retired between 1957 and 1968.<br><br>Note the early CNR paint scheme (pre 1954 black and gold striping,) the early CNR maple leaf logo introduced in 1948, and the lack of tie plates on the nearest track, something seen on other interurban lines including the NS&T.<br><br><i>Original Photographer Unknown, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.</i>

A nice surprise to find today was Trillium Railway's newest customer. Located just across the Canal Sub from Valbruna ASW's former Atlas Steel site, Fonthill Lumber recently expanded to this forty acre property with the spur being built in the last couple of months. Reportedly it has only been in service for the last 1-2 weeks but has been receiving steady traffic. TRRY 1859 is seen pulling a boxcar and empty centrebeam from the spur before setting off a loaded car. The vintage MLW will continue north to St. Catharines, to work Clearwater Paper and Steelcon before making their return south.

A view of the Canadian Pacific Railway 'Upper Yard' at Guelph taken from the Heffernan Street footbridge shows various pieces of MoW service rolling stock behind <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=29496>the unique freight shed</a> that served the Royal City until a <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/photo/F4743B03-ACE8-4F08-99E7-812312363734>fire in May 1991.</a> American crane CPR 414230 can be seen just above caboose 434816, which had been used a few months earlier during February as a pile driver (note parts on car behind) to repair timbers on the wooden trestle <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35155>at mile 29.75 Goderich Sub.</a> Note removed bridge timbers in gondola. Arriving at Stratford mid morning to see no GEXR power in the yard, I set out along the Goderich Sub to track down 581. I would soon find them setting out cars at Broadgrain, just south of Seaforth, before continuing their journey up to Clinton Junction. Seen making its way slowly along the Exeter Subdivision, 581 crawls through Brucefield with 14 cars on the drawbar for customers at Hensall and Exeter. It would return to Stratford that afternoon with 4 cars lifted from Hensall.

Blasting out of Kitchener at track speed, GO 3710 from London appears in Breslau momentarily, passing track panels set aside for the new siding to be installed here (north side) in the near future. Since the time of this image concrete barriers have gone up alongside the Guelph Sub, separating it from the Fleischauer Brothers Landscaping parking lot.

CP 5001, one of only two GMD GP30s on the roster, is seen switching out Canada Wire in Fergus at mile 25.81 of the Elora Sub with caboose 434020 up front. The CN yellow-doored boxcars may be for Moore Business Forms, located on the next block at mile 25.92. Opened in 1966 as Fergus Cable Limited, the site is still in use today by Nexans Canada.
