Kicking up the snow on their homeward trip to Kitchener, CN L540 zips past the Parrish & Heimbecker elevator at Shantz with a few hoppers from Traxxside.

Since my last visit <a href=https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=55227>in early October,</a> motive power at HOPA's Niagara Port Services (former Bioveld?) operation has been swapped from one GP9 to another, with LDSX 4100, the former <a href=https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=54791>CN 4100,</a> assuming this role. This operation has become quite busy, with trains operating almost, if not daily (thanks GC), usually with about 15-20 cars on each trip.<br><br>Of note, <a href=https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50372>HOPA's green SW1200RSu 1305,</a> was seen parked in Allanburg yard this morning with stacks capped. Bioveld logos have been replaced with NPS, Niagara Port Services lettering, also seen on the former Hayes-Dana plant building.

Assuming 230 had departed Toronto hours earlier, I was surprised to hear them call the RTC while puttering around Toronto yard. With a meet with 113 setup at Oshawa, I made my way east to wait for the passage of a pair of CPKC's newest acquisitions, ET44ACs from the Baffinland Railway, a mining railway under development on Baffin Island. Here with horn blaring, CPKC 230 thunders over the town of Port Hope. CP 7433 was the mid-train DPU.

While Metrolinx projects were underway on the Kingston Sub over the weekend, VIA was detouring their trains over the York and Bala Subs around the work block. Here, a delayed 643 is about halfway between Pickering Junction and Doncaster, passing mile 9 of the York Sub. Via 63 with 904 leading will follow about six minutes behind.

The annual increase in fall propane traffic is underway on the OSR, requiring the St. Thomas job to resume its full Mon - Fri schedule. With a heavy day of switching complete, Conductor Lucas rides the point through Ingersoll as they return to the Salford shop.

Autumn means propane season on the OSR, often requiring a couple extras running on a weekend to deliver cars to Factor Gas in St. Thomas. A par of OSR's ex-CP pups are lifting inbound cars out of the Wabash Transfer before shoving back to Factor and delivering empties to CN.

With railfans all around, the joint excursion of the Upper Canada Railway Society and Canadian Railroad Historical Association behind E-10-a 2-6-0 90 and N-4-a 2-8-0 2649 thunders by during a runpast near Ormsby Junction, where the seven mile Coe Hill Sub left the mainline. <br><br>Departing Belleville amid the light rain that morning at 0645h - with a crew from the National Film Board setup in the baggage car - the excursion ran along the Campbellford Subdivision to Anson Junction, taking the east leg of the wye onto the Marmora Subdivision. The train would pause briefly at Bancroft before proceeding three miles north to York River where the train could be wyed for the return trip. Arriving back at Anson Junction, the excursion would continue south into Trenton, turning on the wye before returning north to Trenton Junction to rejoin the Oshawa Sub mainline for the short twelve mile run back to Belleville. The special reached a top speed of 55mph on the high iron, running barely 30 minutes ahead of Toronto - Montreal train 6, due into Belleville at 1815h. <br><br>Notes of the trip per John Freyseng's extensive article in the June 1959 UCRS newsletter. LDSX 4003 is seen working the large HOPA Bioveld facility in Thorold, having just shoved around twenty boxcars onto the siding at left, and about to take another cut deep into the facility. Per the crew, the operation runs as needed, usually twice per week.

Burlington to Allandale* train 661 makes its stop at Caledon East, exchanging passenger, mail, and express before continuing on their way. CNR oil-electric 15836 and trailer C1 only have a short time left rattling along the old Hamilton & North Western right of way before this service draws to a close on July 2, 1960. The Caledon East station, built by the Grand Trunk in 1903, survived until demolition in November 1971. <br><br>Though undated, spring 1960 can be estimated based on the equipment assigned to 661/662. Per Charles Cooper's book, <i>Hamilton's Other Railway,</i> oil-electric cars began operating on this run <a href=http://www.trainweb.org/oldtimetrains/photos/cnr_self-propelled/15830.jpg>in 1933 with CNR 15830</a> and a trailer, as seen on numerous branchlines. This equipment remained until January 1952, when streamlined <A href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=45792>CNR D-1, and trailers C-1 and C-2</a> were assigned to the run. The unique equipment served the communities along the line until the end of 1958, when D-1 and C-2 were transferred to northern Ontario, with CNR 15832 and trailer C-1 replacing it until a time near the end of service. As seen above and in other photos by Ian MacDonald (see below), 15836 appears to have been the last oil-electric assigned to the run with trailer C-1. A reassigned slug set for the Goderich Exeter's Guelph Junction Railway operation is seen at the GJR/CN interchange on XT99, delivered by CN over the weekend. In the foreground is the newly completed XT99a, a second interchange track at this location. Space has been tight on the GJR the last few years, and continued expansion has been a priority, with XT99 being extended late in 2023, and XT97, another interchange track located around the wye off to the left, being added in 2020.

Multiple generations of volunteers at the Halton County Radial Railway take in the scene as Montreal & Southern Counties interurban car 107 prepares to depart towards the east loop, passing London & Port Stanley interurban car 108. The afternoon of Saturday, September 21 saw the Ontario Electric Railway Historical Association celebrate the 70th anniversary of the museum. What started with 8 railfans saving two street cars in the woods just south of Rockwood has grown into one of the largest operating museums in Canada through seven decades of dedicated volunteers.

With the sun below the horizon, two strikes of the gong sound off as TTC Peter Witt streetcar 2894 pulls away from the east turning loop at the Halton County Radial Railway, including the original Toronto Suburban Railway Meadowvale station shelter. This evening was an event for their membership (and invited photographers) in celebration of the museum's 70th anniversary, having been founded in January 1954.<br><br>The public event will take place next Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 1:30pm, featuring a number of invited guests (including founding member, Bob Sandusky,) a parade of streetcars, and unveiling of a plaque at the site of the first spike (just behind me in this image.)

Montreal & Southern Counties Railway interurban car 107 is seen at the switch to the Halton County Radial Railway's east turning loop on one of its first runs in a number of years. This evening was an event for their membership (and invited photographers) in celebration of the museum's 70th anniversary, having been founded in January 1954. Car 107 was the museum's third acquisition, and their first interurban car. Built by the Ottawa Car Company in 1912, it saw service until 1955, and was acquired by the museum in 1956. <br><br>The public event will take place next Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 1:30pm, featuring a number of invited guests (including founding member, Bob Sandusky,) a parade of streetcars, and unveiling of a plaque at the site of the first spike (just behind me in this image.)
