Grand River Railway's Preston Shops is shown here full of freight and passenger equipment. GRR motor 230 is shown beside the shop building on the left, its end banner checker boards were installed in fall of 1949 and removed in 1953 when the motor was overhauled and rebuilt, helping to confirm the photo was taken in 1950. Beside it on the right is LE&N motor 333, and beside that is one of the three “big” motors, LE&N motor 337. Motor 337 was built by Preston Car and Coach in 1921 with two sisters, GRR 226, 228 as shells. The finishing electrics, all from Westinghouse, were installed by the Preston GRR shops. In the mid 1950s these motors (as were 9 of the 10 motors used on the railway) were rebuilt, made much heavier, and some were given larger traction motors. <br><br> On the right are piles of wheels. Preston had their own truing machine in the shop and in 1949-1950 replaced all of the wheels and tires on all of the passenger cars with larger diameter wheels. These wheels piles are part of that exercise. <br><br> In 1961 the line was dieselized by parent CPR using SW1200RS units, which were based out of Preston Shops. An end view of Grand River Railway electric passenger car 864, sitting outside the GRR - LE&N Galt Main Street Station (not to be confused with the CPR's own Galt Station to the north). The Galt Main Street Station was mile zero for both the LE&N and the GRR. The photo is looking north, 864 is facing north on the southbound track, and the light angle would make this a late morning photo. The car is likely off a LE&N Train north from Port Dover, train #5 to Kitchener. <br><br> In the background is the McDougall Foundry, a long-gone casting firm. Speeding east with an MLW RS18, F9B and FPA4 leading the charge, an eastbound VIA-CN passenger train rolls through Hyde Park at Denfield Road, on its way to London. Looking carefully, one can pick out a few blue VIA-painted cars in consist. On the right in the background, east siding switch Lobo on CP's Windsor Sub can be seen.

Grand River Railway car 842 heads north over the bridge at Waterford, likely a "posed" shot for the riders on the fantrip it was operating on. It's seen crossing on the Lake Erie & Northern Railway line over the New York Central's Canada Southern (CASO) mainlines and TH&B interchange trackage.<br><bR>While the Lake Erie & Northern Railway ceased passenger service in 1955, freight service continued until the track on this bridge was abandoned in 1981. The track was re-laid over this bridge in 1984 for the CPR/Stelco Steel Train, only to be abandoned again a few years later. This bridge is still located here and it has been acquired from CP to be part of the rails to trail project call “The Waterford Heritage Trail” that uses portions of the TH&B and the LE&N right of way as a paved trail for cyclists and others through the area today. Grand River Railway car 842 stops at Paris Station for a photo view, with riders having a look around, during a fantrip excursion on the line (note the "Special" signage in the windows). The station, located at milepost 13.3 of the line and built during 1916, was demolished during the early 1980s. An end view of Grand River Railway car 848 at Hespeler Station. The original Hespeler Station building is believed to have been built just after the service began by the then Galt, Preston & Hespeler Street Railway Company in January 1896. In later years, an express car was left in place in the early afternoon for loading. Grand River Railway car 848 is on the daily every 15 minute return trip to Hespeler, pictured at King Street in Preston, Ontario from the Preston Junction Station front area. This view is looking southeast, with the entrance to Riverside park on the left, the crossing that the car is on. To the extreme left was the site of the GRR Preston shops, not shown.<br><br>By the sunlight, this photo was shot just after lunch. Many years earlier, these cars crossed and rode up the centre of the King Street on the bridge over the Speed River on the right. That route was abandoned in 1939 in favour of the route you see here which survives today as the CPR Waterloo subdivision, hauling 6000' automotive trains to the Toyota plant. Passenger service was discontinued in 1955, and electric operations ended in 1961 in favour of diesels from GRR parent CPR. Today that large Preston Furniture Company factory building in the background is also long gone, destroyed by fire. Grand River Railway electric freight motor 230 sits at the GRR's main shops in Preston ON (now part of the City of Cambridge).<br><br>The 230 - known as the "green hornet" by employees and fans - in this photo was painted green, later to be painted tuscan (like all other motors). It is a Baldwin-Westinghouse 'S' class motor (electric locomotives were commonly known as motors or juice jacks) built in 1930 and acquired by the GRR in 1946. This was the second-last S class motor built by Baldwin-Westinghourse. It was later sold to the Cornwall Street Railway as their 17, retired at the end of electric service in Cornwall in 1971, and today is on display near the Cornwall Transit garage.<br><br>This is the first image in a set of photos by the late William (Cecil) Hommerding of Jackson, MI who passed on in 1983, and attended a Sunday April 30th, 1950 NHRS excursion with a group of largely American railfans. These photos document this excursion as seen through Cecil's lens. On a CN-VIA 81 out of London, FP9 6526 in the VIA colours heads westbound with 4 cars in CN's previous passenger scheme at Hyde Park, after just passing under Denfield Road bridge.<br><br>Initially VIA locos carried a large CN noodle on the nose, as VIA was created in 1976 as a marketing brand for CN's passenger services. It would not yet be a separate operation until becoming a Crown Corporation of the government on April 1st 1978.
