PC Ron Parker gives a wave to Engineman Frank Bunker as the 1057 has just passed under Elgin Street, Bowmanville on June 22/74. At this time 1057 belonged to the Ontario Rail Foundation and was leased to the Bytown Railway Society in Ottawa along with the coaches lettered 'Credit Valley'. The National Museum of Science and Technology organized and administered the Wakefield steam trips with Bytown Railway Society providing operating and maintenance assistance. They used 1057 for the summers of 1973 to 1975 while 1201 was being rebuilt. The ORF purchased 1057 from Herb Hanson of Chicago in 1972. The equipment moves from Toronto to Ottawa were one-way fan trips. Thanks to Bruce Chapman, John Mellow and Earl Roberts for some of these details.

CP 4233 leads one of a kind SOO SD40-2B on a westbound at Bowmanville May 6, 1995. The 6450 was originally BN SD40 #6402 and was rebuilt into the 'B' unit after a wreck. The dynamic brake grids have an unusual end placement. It was scrapped in 2004.

[Editors note: MILW paint rare on CPR] A few months before this photo was taken, SOO Line took over much of the eastern part of the bankrupt Milwaukee Road. A number of locomotives were included in the deal and here we see MILW SD-40-2 142 still in full Milwaukee paint between SOO 6615 and 6611. The train is westbound approaching the Elgin Street bridge at mile 164 Belleville Sub.

The New York Central had 10 GP-7s and 12 GP-9s built at GM's London Diesel to avoid import tariffs they would have paid on EMD built units for Canadian use. At the time of this photo several NYC geeps were regular visitors at CP's Toronto Yard for use on Hamilton and Buffalo trains.

The end is near for CPR F2a class Jubilee 3004 and a hint has been chalked on the skirting. 3004 is the last of five built in 1936. Scrapping would come in November of 1958 and none of the five were saved. Thanks to Bob Sandusky for sharing his photo.

CN Extra East 4456 is approaching Bowmanville at Waverly Road with typical power for the time. Notice the freshly burned right of way. Railways were forced to end this practice in the late 1960s and the property soon became the jungle we know today.

CN SW1200RS 1234 leads 3 mates and a new FP9 eastbound at Port Credit. The FP9 is part of CN's last order for 10 and the last F units built by GMD in London.

In early 1966 EMD SD-40 demonstrators 7000 and 7001 paused at Toronto Yard with dynamometer car 62, CN steam generator car 15478 and business cars Mount Stephen and Glengarnock. These units were built on an SD-35 frame while production SD-40s were on the longer SD-45 frame leaving the 'platforms' on each end. CP must have been impressed as orders followed quickly.

It's been said that CP's maroon and grey paint scheme looks the best on an SD-40. Here is 5503, just under a month old with 5500 at Toronto Yard. F units were my personal choice but the 'Cadillacs' look pretty good.

This westbound CN express and piggyback is led by RS-18 3107. The train is on the CP bridge at Port Hope and is about to take the interchange track to return to CN's Kingston Sub. after detouring on CP. Just to the right of the photo, CN has a derailment at the west end of their bridge which is blocking both main lines.

No 27 with 3116 leading, the all stops evening local from Belleville to Toronto has backed into the service track at Bowmanville to allow a westbound freight to pass. The freight has a GMD-CLC-MLW combination for power. The local was pool train number 9 until the pool agreement ended in October 1965. The end of this local service would soon leave Bowmanville with no passenger rail service. Thanks go to Ron Visockis for fixing an unwanted reflection in the photo.

Consolidated Sand and Gravel operated this Whitcomb loco at their Paris faculity. It was the first post-war diesel built by CLC in Kingston. Thanks go to Bob Sandusky for restoring the photo by Clayton Morgan.

The order board is on yellow and the hoop has just been caught as agent George Borchuk delivers a message to extra 4039 east on Feb. 23, 1966. The Belleville Sub. has been CTC since 1960, so I'm guessing that train orders are not being used here, but it's a message important enough to put the train order signal on and issue a 'nil' clearance.

On May 19, 1974 CN had a huge freight derailment about a mile east of Bowmanville. Both main lines of the Kingston Sub. were blocked and several trains detoured on CP over the next couple of days. Here we see westbound Turbo 129 on one year old welded rail at mile 163.9 of CP's Belleville Sub. This view from my yard is now almost blocked by trees.

In late June 1972 Hurricane Agnes hit the US Northeast with heavy rain and winds. It turned out to be the most costly storm up to that time in the Northeast. Washouts and damage to bridges resulted in detours of EL and D&H trains through Canada in early July. Here, a westbound is just east Elgin Street, Bowmanville at 10 am. on July 5, 1972
