With the golden hour sunlight I've come to crave as a photographer running out and waiting an extra hour than normal I became desperate hoping to hear a horn in the distance. Just before sunset I heard the rumble and saw the headlights down the line. A long and slow 133 (formerly 143) made its way past milepost 110 of the Winchester sub. With only the solo unit and 102 cars it finally made sense why it was late. After passing it was only 10 minutes till sunset when the light finally ran out. Too close for comfort.

When I got the report that IC 1029 was leading CN M369 out of Montreal I almost couldn't believe it. This is one of only a handful of Illinois Central SD70's still left in the original paint. It left in the late afternoon so I had to wait a couple hours for it to be shootable stopped in the Belleville via station for a crew change. What makes this more interesting is that it made the trip from Montreal to Toronto all without the use of a horn. In fact we're thinking it was stolen when this unit was previously in the states.

CP 651 was the first train to blast through the foot of snow on the Belleville sub this afternoon. Definitely a spectacle to watch it pass. Here it is passing MP34.
Our laneway wasn't plowed at the time so I had to hike about 5km to get to the tracks. I'd say it was worth it

A Toronto origninate 142 blasts through the signals guarding the Lens siding.
I was quite lucky to tune into the online durham scanner to hear that 142 was being lead by 7023. This would mark the first time in months that an ACU lead on the Belleville. Most times crews wye the power or find other ways for the newer GEs to lead.

In an odd turn of events and a timely meet at Tichborne pushing this train into daylight, CN 3061 leads CP 112 past Crow Lake.
The hotbox detector reported a bitterly cold -16c and for the second time in a row I froze my fingers getting the shot. Yet again it was worth it.

CP 119-07 idles away in Smiths Falls waiting for a VIA to pass before starting work in the yard. The lashup was a beauty with a BNSF trailing.

Sun Rays & Soy Beans. A work train lead by CMQ 9011 passes by a farmers field of soybeans just before starting work grading the ballast in Finch. The engines were dropped off in Smiths Falls the previous day from 143.

I headed to the Smiths Falls yard after hearing about a couple work trains that were parked. I ended up only finding 6251 & 6018 idling away in the shop tracks on the north side of the yard. After I got my fair share of shots I headed back to the station to wait for 119. Shortly after it showed up with the usual 2 GE's up front.

With smoke in the air from forest fires out west, CP 118 cruises past the Elmsley siding just minutes away from a crew change in Smiths Falls, Ont.

CP 142 makes its way across the Winchester Subdivision and passes an older farmhouse. Although its age it has been well kept and the owners were keeping the classic look as we rolled up and asked for permission to take our shots.

CN Q105 with all of CN's heritage units trailing ties down at Shannonville due to congestion at Mac yard while a hotshot intermodal passes.
This was quite the treat to watch unfold as the railway community came together and posted their updates and their shots of these newly released units. I made the trip from my namesake town and stopped by at the end of the rush and was surprised to only see one other railfan stop by shortly after we arrived. From what I heard it was quite the zoo and even the railway police were called however we did not see any.

CP 143 rumbles past Bedell with 2 blue CEFX GP20D's trailing. These units were brought up from storage on the CMQ and stayed in the Montreal St. Luc yard for a couple weeks before continuing their journey west.
We're not sure the exact reasoning on why they did this but it was definitely a treat to see something out of the ordinary on an otherwise regular powered 143.
