The VIA Rail sign on the side of the former CP station at White River. Oops!! Notice the correction to the train number! The service is thrice weekly from Sudbury to White River – leaving Sudbury as train #185 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; laying overnight in White River; and returning to Sudbury as train #186 on Wednesday, Friday and Sundays. There is no Monday service.

Supplies are loaded into Rail Diesel Car 6250 adjacent to the former CP White River station for the nine and half hour return trip to Sudbury. VIA train 186 is scheduled for an 0900 departure.

This Friday morning [26 July] in White River, Ontario dawns with rain; but by 0900, the time VIA 186 is set for departure back to Capreol and Sudbury, the steady rain has become a light mist. Once the half dozen passengers had boarded by the former station, the 2 car train – VIA 6250 / VIA 6105 proceeded eastward on the main track a short ways and stopped adjacent to the maintenance-of-way buildings where several CP employees loaded supplies into the baggage car. At the same time eastbound #112 – cp9372 – arrived and stopped for the crew change. Which train headed east first?? VIA 186, of course!!

The last spike on the North Shore section between Montreal and Winnipeg was driven at Noslo, just west of Jackfish, Ontario, on 16 May 1885. Colonel Oswald, of the Montreal Light Infantry, hammered home the last spike. He was on a troop train travelling home from the Riel rebellion. Fifty years later, on May 16, 1935, a few of the original workers and veterans of the CPR, re-enacted the driving of the last spike at Noslo. A stone cairn and cement monument commemorate the site.
The site is quite remote. The cairn is located on the north side of the track at mileage 102.7, well over 4 miles from the siding at Jackfish.

CP SD40-2 6080 is the power for the Track Evaluation Train parked on Depot 1 track in Thunder Bay for the weekend. Note the camera mounted on the centre of the cab roof and the feed wire running down alongside the cab and back towards the evaluation car. The train continued eastward on Wednesday am.

The TEC train is arriving at Thunder Bay and the conductor is about to disembark and line the switch for the depot track. The crew in Track Evaluation Car #63 have completed an inspection of the track and sidings on the Kaministiquia subdivision from Ignace to Thunder Bay. In its wake numerous slow orders will have been issued, primarily on account of frost heaves to the roadbed.

The stately grain elevators of JRI [James Richardson International] along the shore of Lake Superior on the 'Port Arthur' side of Thunder Bay provide the backdrop. A pair of AC4400CW's - cp9597 and cp9621 along with SD90MAC 9153 lead hotshot train CP#103. No remotes or distributed power back then! For the next mile the tracks are hemmed in by Fort William road on one side and CN's Thunder Bay North yard on the other.

A little over a mile to the west of the Kenora station the double track mainline splits with the south track boring straight through a rock knoll and the north track curving around it. Eastbound train cp110 running today with ES44AC CP8774 as the rear remote is about to pass through this short tunnel highlited with spring greenery.

At some point during the winter and especially after a major storm the tracks must be cleared and the snow pushed back as far as possible. The crew on the Jordan spreader 402886 started in Schreiber previously and are now working in the siding at Nipigon. Once the snow is pushed back in the siding, they will return to the east end and get back onto the main line. Proceedng westward they will clear off the mainline and continue onwards to Sprucewood, Hurkett and eventually Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay is an inspection point for eastbound loaded petroleum crude oil [un#1267] trains. While the cars are being inspected in the Westfort yard, the head end power [for this train it is cp8613, cp9810] usually goes to the shops for fuel and maintenance. Prior to heading east with 120 cars, the Schreiber crew will add a remote unit to the tail end. In this instance the unit is almost new ES44AC cp 8951.
