About awmooney

Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

Another one of those unique station buildings I so enjoy. This one at the junction of CN Souris Sub (off to the left) and Montague Sub (on the right). The old station by 1981 had lost its' freight shed (far side) and was being converted to a restaurant which might have had a very short life, if one at all, as the building was moved not too long after. Point Deroche, about 8 KM to the north, is now where the station resides as a B&B, leaving a void in the once important railroad village of Mount Stewart. In the photo, the line to Souris looks reasonably well used, for it is potato harvest season on the Isle.

Westbound CP stops at Ignace station for a crew change while it appears a couple of geezers are snoozing the day away out front. What a life!! I was doing a wander in the NorthWest of the province on this trip and still regret misplacing my notes, thus the leader CP 4703 is the only identifiable unit. Nice station. It was designated a railway heritage structure under the provisions of the Railway Station Protection Act as of Feb. 15, 1994.

Ontario Paper #4 is shown bringing a cut of pulpwood cars across Allanburg Rd to the paper mill. CN's daily "pulp train" out of Toronto, named obviously for the loads on the head end, has set off these loads about a mile south of the plant. Ontario paper began operations back on Sept 5, 1913. It currently operates as Resolute Forest Products.Dull, miserable day, but a good way to spend Valentine's Day. :o)

Lineup of interesting power at the old NBEC facility in Campbellton sees four former CP RS-18u locos with a plow between. The units retained their former CP numbers but the "CP" on the flanks was painted out and replaced with a cruddy "NBEC". One would suppose with 25 of these engines on the roster, painting was out of the question. As it turned out, the NBEC, beginning life as a subsidiary of Quebec Railway Corporation on Jan. 28, 1998, with their mainline the former CN secondary main thru the province, stumbled along until being bought back by CN in 2008. Another fallen flag. The locos pictured from front to back are x-CP 1821, 1819, plow 55419, 1866 and 1835. To the extreme left by the 1821 one can just make out the bridge over the Restigouche River to Quebec.

Here is another one of those old pre-VIA passenger train scenes, featuring the usual mish-mash of whatever power for the head end. CN 4017, VIA 6865, CN 3126 lead westbound #75, the days' usually most patronized train thru here, with the standard long consist. I always referred to this location as 'Bayview East' on account the train is approaching Bayview Jct. Nowadays the location is known as "Snake", and it is getting increasingly difficult to get clear photos here due to new signal tower and encroaching foliage. The leader, GP40 CN 4017, was renumbered to 9317 in 1981, and may still be around somewhere as GMTX 2103. Trailing unit RS-18 was part of a series 3100-3129 committed to passenger service back in those days. Snake Rd bridge in the background is still used by fans for photography, but it is imperative that the bridge and approaches be kept clear despite the lane being a dead-end. Private access to a cemetery.

The ONR passenger train southbound, with ONR 2000 and 204 up front, seen here stopped at the Englehart station to pick up a couple of passengers before heading out on the Temagami Sub and eventually Toronto. The service, as we all know, was axed by the Liberal Party of Ontario, but rumours of its' return have been surfacing lately. Thats all they are for now..just rumours. But one can hope.

I was heading south on old Hwy 69 (now Nobel Rd here) and hoping to pick up a freight southbound when I heard chatter all of a sudden for a northbound. First spot I could think of was at Felsman Drive just south of Nobel. Not a good location, but at least in the rain I caught all 4 units in the few seconds I had to get the camera out. Good thing, too. Behind CP 5747 and 5740 were two of those elusive Santa Fe units that were on lease to CP for a short period in 1987. Around thirty of them were supposed to be out there, of which just one sported that "SF" paint scheme. Lucky or what? Units are 3615 and 3600.

View from Main St. overpass looking NW toward the former Ottawa Valley(CP) yard that has now been moved south of the city in order to free up valuable waterfront/downtown lands. OVR 4204 and OSRX 504 are seen working a long cut of cars. The 4204 was acquired in 1996 and shortly after this photo was taken departed for Lakeland and Waterways startup in Alberta that September. It has since been retired. The second unit, former CP 8044, renumbered 504 assigned Guelph Jct Rwy, was on loan. It today still smokes-up on the GJR.

Interesting town, is Goderich. In a photo taken around 2 years after startup of the GEXR, we see three of the original four locomotives hard at work bringing heavy loads of salt up to the yard from the Sifto Salt Mine on Lake Huron (seen in background)in order to build a train to deliver to Stratford. It is a warm day, as evident by the mist, making it difficult to see the long string of salt-laden hoppers in the left background, just in front of the lake freighter at the salt dock. Old track line in mid-background is former CP Goderich line, now reduced to a hiking trail. Photo shows GEXR 177, 178 and 179 sharing in the struggle up a rather steep grade,
Fourth unit in the stable, 180, is nowhere to be seen. The salt mine, incidentally, is the largest in the world. There is so much salt down there 1750 meters down that the mining area consists of 7 sq kms below the lake and the vein stretches as far as Cleveland and Detroit to the south. Long ago a tropical sea occupied this part of the world, and when the sea disappeared, the salt was left behind.

Back when the mainline that ran from the Niagara bridge down to Brookfield was double tracked thru the city of Niagara Falls, we see the late (steamy) day #321 with an old paint leading, B&O 4022, with the newer Chessie System yellow 4394 behind. The train is around Milepost 1 which paralleled Palmer Av in town. Hard to believe this image was taken in the city.

For whatever reason, AMTK 823 was disabled on its way to Toronto from the USA as #98 the night before, spotted going by from out the upstairs window at our home by my ever-nosey sidekick (hah!!)with CSX power on the lead. Otherwise I would not known of this train. (She likes to take credit for being the first 'fan to see this lashup) So we knew it would be coming back the following day; as pictured here passing St. Catharines Station. It was a "working" day for me, we were on the picket lines in Stoney Creek, so when it was AMTK time I broke away for 'washroom and coffee break' and most fellow employees questioned why it took over an hour and a half to perform those duties. Heck, I wasn't passing up this chance for such head end power on what normally to me is a dull train. If you look closely at the photo, you will see a special car on the rear. It is "West Texas and Buffalo Steamship and Railway Company" coach, the 'Dagny Taggart'. If I hadn't snagged a shot of that, I would have never remembered the name. :o) Oh; second unit is CSX 2804.

We saw photos of the demise of the St. Thomas & Eastern last winter, one of the 3 lines that made up the Trillium Rwy group. Here is a scene from better times, the very start-up of the Port Colborne Harbour Railway, which was the oldest of the shorts that became known as Trillium.
The day of ceremonies was July 2, 1997, a blistering hot day wherein the locals forsook their coffee shops and backyard gardening in order to hear Prez Wayne Ettinger preach the promise of a new railroad in town. It is he in the cap and suit; no one else would be caught dead in a get-up such as that on a day that was in the 30C+ range. We are downtown, the old CN Port station is behind me and the canal is background to this photo. I might add there are a couple of "RPca'ers in the photo as well. You know who you are. :o)

I was amazed at the speed this train flew past. I'm standing on the Bruce Trail crossing across from the former Dundas Station site babbling away with a friend, enduring the raw wind and snow as we waited for this special. All of a sudden it is around the bend, and I daresay it had to be doing 65 MPH. It is around 0930 on Super Bowl Sunday, as the game was played later that evening in Detroit. Aboard the Express I am assuming were the winners of some sort of contest put out by Budweiser, and hopefully they weren't overly polluted by the time they made the border. (VIA 6425 was on the other end, giving the train an added boost.) The VIA 6424 was previously in a Spiderman wrap, which I think was removed early 2005 and the BUD wrap put on later that spring. I saw this colourful unit only a few times up to Bowl Day, and this was my best shot. Never saw this Wrap again. I suppose it was removed right after the festivities ended.

The northbound "Canadian" #9 rolls over the trestle at Parry Sound on a beautiful summer's day with VIA 6550, 6636 and 6632 the power. The leader has an interesting history; began as CP 4099 in 1953, then to CP 1400, to Nebkota as their #55, and back to CP 1400 in 1998 when it was painted up in tuscan and grey as well as being upgraded to an FP9 from an FP7. Unfortunately it was retired from active duty early in 2012.

Many years ago this scene could be repeated at almost every CN station across the country. No doubt this will bring back memories for the older fellers on this site. The ivory frame, orangy-red door, grey board/batten appearance of the old wooden structure and those flimsy brittle plastic signs advertising how to connect with the railroad. I wonder where all those signs have gone? The "Zenith" phone number was brought to my attention. Just one of those changes that go unnoticed in everyday life. To reach "Passenger" as noted on the board, dial "O" for operator and ask for the Zenith number (49900) and the operator would look in her notebook at the switchboard and make the connection for you, thereby relieving either party of any long distance changes. This was the forerunner of the "1-800" system which came into existence around 1967. Grimsby CN station was destroyed by fire on December 31, 1994...........ah!! so THATS where these particular signs have gone.....:o(

Nice trio of CN GP9s rolling thru Bayview, a train bound for Fort Erie on account all these units and many other Geeps were based at Fort Erie for a lot of their lifetime. A rather dull, quiet day as it was a Tuesday and most people at work, even those we cannot really see in this image .......after all, the "famous" Bayview Walkbridge was Under Construction; it can just barely be seen in the right background. This structure is like so many others in 'train-land'. We use them for photographic locations but somehow we never seem to include the structures themselves in any of our shots. Power on train is CN 4600, 4589 and 4577.

The days of CN's "Bullet-Nose Betty" 6060 getting rather long-in-the-tooth as she is now being assisted by VIA 6539 on the twice weekly tourist run from Toronto to Niagara Falls and return. In this view, one can see the Welland Canal bridge 6 counterweight in the background, and crossing gates returning to their upright position at the Glendale Av crossing, as the Toronto-bound afternoon train roars past the old Merritton station (destroyed by fire Oct 1994). Some of the local population watch in admiration. That is the old GM plant in background on the left; foreground freight cars are in now-taken-up Merritton yard, while local switcher CN 7168 waits it all out.

[Editors note: historic] CN 5047, 5525 westbound pass the old Canada Crushed Stone Ltd facility near mile 4, Dundas Sub. This image, while a tad grainy, shows a rather open view of the old rail siding which led up to the large screen house . Operations before shutting down in the early 1970s consisted of stone quarried up on the mountain brow (Dundas Peak)going thru the High Brow Crusher (demo'd 1975) and then down to the Screen House (demo'd 1993)and then over the CN mainline via the gantry (demo'd 1986)conveyer belt and stockpiled on the south side for later shipping. Interesting in this image is the hopper at the base of the incline trackage. This steep grade operated by cable pulling cars up the grade, supplies usually went this way. Perhaps this car was held back for use in removal of some equipment as the shutdown was finalized. Steetley Inc., which purchased the CCSL in 1951, maintained a small shipping facility south of the tracks until the early 1980s. Walking the area today, it is hard to imagine the landscape being so open. All that remains now is the incline bed, which is now a hiking trail; all rail is gone but a lot of old ties remain.

OOPS!!! The was my first time seeing this happening, but in the years since I have seen numerous incidents in which locomotives did a nose-dive into a turntable pit, and am wondering why this was so common. In this example, CP GP9 8531 is nose into the pit, fuel leaking from a rupture, and workmen attempting the rescue first by stacking ties under the truck, while feller GP9s CP 8630 and 8682 are chained to the offending loco to ensure stability. Location not exactly as marked, I have forgotten the location of the roundhouse over the past 40 years. :o)
