About awmooney

Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

I still remember this day vividly. For a Victoria Day weekend, it was stifling hot around North Bay. In the high 80s (F), and with all the rock and pavement near the Shop, it felt like 100. Still, I am so glad I at least made a quick trek up onto the Main St overpass and captured this image at the ONR diesel facility. CN 5019 and 5054 moving around, I am guessing to get into position to take a train south to Toronto; but the fact there are four F units out front of the shop certainly indicates the age of this image. I wish I had recorded the unit numbers......oh well..........
It is worth mentioning that this sub-standard photo is the results of the cropping of an old Instamatic square slide, besides being tired by time this camera certainly wasn't the best equipment to make a trip to North Bay with, but it was better than nothing.

It used to be CN and CP power. But by 1999, the x-CN 3586 and x-CP 5006 became part of the Railink fleet, seen here in front of the old North Bay CP station. At the time of this photo this yard area was the hub of the RLK-Ottawa Valley. Since this photo was taken, the city went under an ambitious renewal project in which the yard was relocated south and the mainline shifted toward the waterfront as a thin corridor to enable the city to develop prime downtown area for parks and recreation. The station is preserved and serves as a museum among other things.

Currently this 0-6-0 sits in the Western Development Park at Saskatoon as CP 2166, it's original number from when it was built back in 1905. It became CP 6166,then Manitoba & Saskatchewan Coal 6166 (as pictured), then Western Development Museum 6166 and now is back to CP 2166; having moved from North Battleford where I photographed it sometime in between. These museum parks are really something; four of them around the province and all well worth the visit. Now I am wondering, since it has been 40 years since I have seen this locomotive, if anyone has some photos to share of it at its new location and new paint.

A bit of 'action' on the Galt sub!! Looking across the pond at Campbellville, we see CP 5521 and an unidentified NS leaser westbound as it crosses Guelph Line and meets CP 1858 and 4235, work train. Meets here were very hard for me to come by.

ONR 1733 and 1734 head southward on a beautiful June afternoon. That old shack in the field probably is all there is left of South Mindoka. The sawmill town died in the 1940s and was abandoned by 1960. Another ghost town of the North. Only a mile up the line from here was the community of Mindoka itself, still a namesign on the ONR. It once had bunks for the T&NO employees as well as the Temiskaming & North Ontario railroad station. It too, vanished.

Nice warm early summer night in Parry Sound. I had been sitting in the station yakking it up with the agent/operator (Jimmie Bell) and decided I would wander out for a night shot of the building. Something I had not yet done there. I was greeted with smirks when I got back into the safety of that station. Only an out of towner would be dumb enough to take on combat with the voracious mosquitoes. Yeah, I lost. It was a long day out there taking pictures because the southbound Canadian was very late; showing up somewhere around 11PM. Normally it was early evening back then.

You never know what you might find. Here at the CBNS shop in Sydney some years ago I came across a couple of odd out of service Georgia Southwestern locos. They had been acquired in 1998, and eventually scrapped 2008. (what is that fixture behind the horns?) Also in this 'deadline' were CBNS 3842, IORY 62 and former CN 2028, a C-630M, stenciled IBCX (Indiana Boxcar?) and sold to a scrap dealer. I think this is the unit I saw cut up in pieces at Cohocton, NY a few years ago.

While wandering out back at MacMillan Yard some years ago when I actually could, I happened across this old MLW CN 2030 in a state of despondency after suffering some sort of oil bath. Probably a unit ahead let loose out on the road. I am hoping someone out there in the know could give a run down on just what they think lead to this. Thanks!!

A lot of the Sou Ontario railfans are familiar with Garnet. Within sight of the Nanticoke facility, there always seems to be power at the south end of the yard up until mid-day. And the variety over the years has been most interesting. Whenever I am traveling along Hwy 3, I look over to see if there is anything warranting a visit. This is a nice set. The photo is from 1998 and all four locomotives were acquired by Railink that year. X-CN 3585 (HR412), 3502, 3508 (both M-420s, x-CN) and former CP 5005 (GP35) make up the consist. And the sunshine completes it. Nice !!

The now-defunct CN #144 trailer train tries best to impersonate the ribbon-rail it is polishing as it snakes downward toward Bayview Jct, about 4.7 miles out. This view from up on Dundas Peak, as much it is beautiful, requires either a good eye or an assistant with binoculars in order to pull in the engine numbers. On this day, I had neither.

The old Pere Marquette station in Ruthven. The PM became under control of the Chesapeake & Ohio long before I shot this image in 1977. The station is abandoned, fallen into disuse. Too bad it could not be saved, for it was of rather interesting construction. The building was gone soon after I took this photo.

In somewhat of a response to Glenn Cherry's recent submission showing TRRY 1859 rolling along trackage that was newly laid in 1997 and the canal bridges in the background, I decided to dig up a shot of a train on that former lift-style Bridge 20. Unfortunately back then it was dicey at best to try and drive over bridge 21 to give chase, but rather follow the train on foot. And that was no piece of cake either. I did manage one shot on each side of the bridge plus this image taken as it is crossing westbound. But back then, with no zoom lens available, this was as good as it got. Pictured is CN 7166, returning to Port Colborne from Nickel, as indicated in an old CN timetable. The switcher is an SW8, built 1951 and whole series gone by 1989. I must have looked like some sort of deranged nut running around out there on a HOT day, but, well, we all have our weird habits.:o)

Here is an angle photographers seldom bothered with at the old Dundas station. But, it was worth a try. It is around the noon hour that VIA #72 eastward passes, so I hiked up into the hill and cleaned out some brush to wait for it. Standard train. Power 6781 and 6865. It was worth it. History recorded.

The main reason I am posting this shot is for Historical Purposes, as there are a number of TH&B devotees on this site. So where did all that old TH&B rolling stock go? Here is a long string of cars no doubt heading for the scrapper. Perhaps to the United States. I never did find out. RIP.

Back in the summer of 1974 on a beautiful day we see CN 4569, 4592 and 5050 westbound past the location of the old Paris station. This image was taken from the side of John St where it passes over the CN main. The end of train caboose is barely visible on the other side of the huge Grand River bridge, a Paris landmark.

Actually to me this scene does not seem like four years ago already, but the power lashup seems like light years ago. We see nothing like this any more. Ethanol empties coming back to Canada and heading westward with CP 5920 ICE 6101, 6457 and DME 6359, she with the faded Mt. Rushmore decal on the flanks. Not many of these 'tank trains' any more, and what we see is usually photographically uninspiring.

Good old days, already. This scene is only from 1988 but it shows late afternoon activity at the far end of the long Fort Erie yard near 'CN Duff'(since pulled up). Arriving from Mac Yard Toronto is CN 2315, GT 6422 and CN 9309; about to pass westbound NS 8629 and 8575.

Beautiful sunny day many years ago in December of 1978 sees Conrail "Canadian Geeps" 7436 and 7437 and a van sitting out front of the Welland Yard office. This is now operated by CP.

View from the Victoria St overpass in the Falls shows a line up of CN locomotives pooled at the CN yard to wait out a national rail strike brought on by the 3200 members of the track maintenance personnel (Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Workers)over job security.

Basic Bayview: To start off the New Year 2017 offered up here is a basic shot of Bayview Junction as it would appear back in the pre-spring days of 1974. Open and barren. CN 5013 and 2023 are pulling a westbound around the bend, I think back then speed restrictions to 15 MPH, but have forgotten. The 'third' track is still intact; the old location in which engines back in the steam days waited to assist the westbounds up the long 9 mile grade thru Copetown. It is now just a stub, used by MoW, note track stored there. One thing that has not changed over the years is the abundance of litter, the melting snows leave so much to be undesired each spring.
