About sdfourty

Best hobby in the world ! A photographer friend recommended the Nikon brand, bought my first used Nikon in 1976 and continue to use that Nikon body regularly. Best ever train ride: Extra 6060 west, with seven blue with yellow stripes CC&F cars, Ottawa to Toronto via the now lifted Smiths Falls subdivision - at 25 mph, then onto the Kingston sub, west of Napanee the engineman let 6060 run: at 80+ mph, sounded like the Turbo ! Then a quick deceleration & stop at Port Hope: the crowd was huge ! And demonstrated that the 'grape vine' really worked (who needs "social media" ! ) : the whole town showed up! sdfourty.

During the Turbo era, with eight daily (M-F) fast Montreal - Toronto trains (four Turbo, four Rapido (four each direction)),

the morning daily, all stop, Toronto - Montreal, Toronto - Ottawa locals were the Lakeshore / Capital (afternoons Bonaventure / The Exec and overnight Cavalier)
<br>

VIA's 1982 timetables show daily Budd Car trains #621 & #622 requiring 6 hours 25 minutes to serve the 202 mile, Gaspe – Matapedia rail route line (for comparison Matapedia to Moncton is 198 rail route miles)
<br>
<br>
VIA trains #16 & #17 ( Matapedia - Gaspe) were cut back to Chandler PQ ( 142 rail route miles to/from Matapedia ) Dec 10, 2011, due to track conditions including the condition of the rail bridge at Grand Pabos at mile 42 (from New Carlisle)
<br>
<br>
Trains #16 & #17 were annulled August 13, 2013 due to further track deterioration. The July 2014 VIA timetables show trains #16 & #17 service is 'temporarily suspended' between Port -Daniel (west of Chandler) and Gaspe.
<br>
<br>
At that time the Matapedia – Gaspe railway was owned / operated by a private Corporation
<br>
<br>
November 21, 2014, the owner / operator, filed for creditor protection.
<br>
<br>
May 2015: the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) purchased the railway right-of-way and now owns the railway line between Matapédia and Gaspé. (The Ontario equivalent ownership would be the Ministry of Transportation, & interestingly the current Ontario Transport Minister is Caroline Mulroney, the daughter of ex PM Brian Mulroney and his government designed the January 1990 VIA Rail train off debacle)

<br>
June 2023: Regular freight operations (SCFG) extend east to New Richmond near mile 68 (from Matapedia) and perhaps further east, the PQ government has pledged more money to repair & upgrade the railway to Gaspe (in particular from Port Daniel to Gaspe), VIA has stated that trains 16 & 17 will return only after the full line to Gaspe is repaired, freight operations to Gaspe now expected to return 2026.

and somewhat unusual being a Saturday, The Push was more commonly called Monday to Friday.

More The Push
<br>

CP Toronto Region, 'The Push' was common up to the early 1980's. The name was assigned by the North Toronto Subdivision / Belleville (Toronto Region) Dispatcher and /or the Agincourt Yard Coordinator and both would regularly use the radio call - 'The Push' to the CP crew handling the engine(s) that was tasked with assisting trains up the hill from Leaside through Don Mills to Kennedy and Agincourt yard. The assists I saw were pulls verses pushes..nevertheless....CP regularly maxed out the first generation locomotive(s) tonnage. Other The Push duties included transferring power between Agincourt, Lambton and John Street. After the John Street roundhouse ceased servicing diesel locomotives, and prior to VIA (October 1978) The Push regular evening assignment was to move The Canadian power (usually a single F unit such as 4066, on occasion a 1400 series) to Agincourt.
