The sun didn’t feel like lighting this sweet area up for the shot but at least the shot was taken. GEXR 581 led by RLK 4095 an ex CN GP40 and piloted by an awesome crew notches the units up for the climb out of the Port of Goderich to the station up in town. They paused at the station (GEXR shop) for a quick break before running back to Stratford lifting cars at Seaforth Elevator on the way. The 16-cylinder turbocharged engine under 4095’s hood never disappoints in the high notches, at least for sound.

The day of the 2019 annual Bayview meet was rather just a gevo shooting festival until this showed up. After working Aldershot for a little while, the engineer on 435 opens up the throttle on the BC Rail C40-8M for the climb up to Copetown as it passes under the rocky part of the Niagara Escarpment overlooking Dundas Ontario. Batches of CN C40-8’s, C40-8W’s, and C40-8M’s on CN are planning to be sold throughout 2020 so I thought I’d take a trip down my gallery to remember what I captured of these dying breeds. This truly was an awesome day past after 16:00hrs. I also like the vibe of the BC rail under the mountain. Natural habitat? I think so

Sun playing tricks on me. OSR has strong plans to cease operations down CN’s Cayuga Sub by the end of the month meaning today as of April 9th 2020, will be its second out of fifth run as they operate the Tilsonburg job Thursday’s only. It’s truly crazy to know the history of rail lines and what traversed them in the past, this location is really one of them though that stands out as it was the scene of the diamond with the CASO and Cayuga Subdivisions. And now the only rail line that’s left in the scar of the busy diamond is coming to an end so thankfully, the sun cooperated for a nice scene with the refurbished caboose placed in between the 2 once busy lines. They crossed just behind this shot and you can still see the signal mast for the Wabash searchlight signal just behind the 2 SW 1200’s. The mast is now repainted and touched up in a bad way. At least in my opinion. The Cayuga Clipper will continue its slow run east towards Aylmer and Tilsonburg spotting on the way in Aylmer at the local ethanol industry. It would be unfortunate if all customers shut down as OSR ceases operation meaning the line is useless so it will most likely be torn up but who knows yet. Just gotta shoot it.

An afternoon of sun led to an evening full of gloomy clouds and sun only possible in sucker holes that lasted just shy of a minute but at the last 20 minutes of light roughly, the sun provided an interesting affect to the moisture in the clouds that later came down at darkness. With a trio of GEVO’s wide open in throttle, a possible CN 398 pulls hard eastbound out of the city of London passing under the newly built Kiwanis Park pedestrian bridge over the double track just east of the yard lead at Highbury. This really was the only eastbound in the afternoon that wasn’t backlit so my brother Lucas, Mitchell Gault and I waited for an eastbound that came out under the skyline with the sun trying to give us somewhat of a silhouette.

CP’s CWR Train throttles up light power as it rolls down the east end of the wye at Galt Yard to tie onto their train sitting in the Galt passing track just behind the auto racks. The pair of multimark SD40-2’s will later take the train back east to Toronto after waiting for the CP 4522 and 3083 to tag onto the rail train for transit to Toronto. The pair of aged 40’s would sit on the east end of the wye until 255 cleared East Siding Switch Orr’s Lake for them to get the light and head east.

OSR’s St Thomas Job has finished departing Putnam after switching a local propane supplier in the town. The 3 of us chased it down it’s straight run to St Thomas where the train will switch out the TTX boxcars on the head end at Messenger Freight then go on back to Ingersoll within the hour. The K3 horn from the ex SOO GP7 shattered the area as the engineer starting blowing for the crossing about 500 meters past the Highway 401 bridge. It was overall a gloomy day to chase OSR but this shot and a few others would’ve been in pretty harsh backlight if it wasn’t for the clouds. The Cayuga Clipper was already out of St Thomas at this point which we chased after this train started proceeding north back to Ingersoll meeting up with more of the guys on the way in the late afternoon. For me anyway, it’s good to grab lots of shots of runs that don’t occur daily at all as you know their day’s aren’t numbered, but their future isn’t as stable as something you would see on a class one rail line. OSR is rumoured to be ceasing operations down the Cayuga Sub at the end of the month so ignoring the lighting conditions, I’m glad we all had a good chase for something that is soon to be abolished quickly.

Definitely not the coolest thing on CN’s roster up in lead, CN 331 (when it existed) drags it’s 150 car train down hill towards Komoka Junction passing under the scenic bridge at Franks Lane west of London that goes over the CN here, and under the CP to the north (left). The Kingpost truss bridge apparently was a rare form of truss bridge that had metal supports on the vertical parts on both sides as the rest of the bridge was made from solid wood. It definitely makes for a better picture location shooting the train going under this cool piece of infrastructure then standing on it shooting the plain straight double track and farm fields.

Stalling at Acton the previous night due to CN 5258’s engine failing on the westbound run, trailing units 2635, 4125, and GMTX 2325 were sent from Mac to assist the train westbound from Georgetown where they were sitting waiting for the rescue power. They pulled from a stop after VIA 84 cleared the station at Georgetown as they got their light to proceed onto the Guelph Subdivision. Knowing the BC Rail C40-8M will lead east in daylight, I was finally motivated to shoot something 10 minutes from my house. Here, CN L533 is rolling through Mosborough Ontario just west of Guelph with about 5000 feet of train in tow for Mac Yard and the BC Rail up front. Interesting to know that 4125 and GMTX 2325 were isolated both ways of the trip possibly for backup power if 4607 failed.

Pulling up to Guelph Junction seeing SOO 4410 leading long hood forward with a cut of cars for interchange with the Guelph Junction Railway, it was a bit of a buzzkill knowing it won’t lead in the great sun back to London but at least 3129 that was up front for the westbound trip back was a great matching unit for 4410 especially in elephant style. Interesting how the SOO GP38-2 blends in with the CP 3129 and the covered hoppers upfront.

After running down the CP Waterloo Sub to interchange cars at Southern Junction with CN, I hear on the scanner that 2242 W is off Back Track Switch Galt and is ready to Highball west to Wolverton. It’s sunny out and it’s a westbound in the afternoon so a typical shot of a CP local in this area didn’t amuse me at all so a quick turn off Trussler road to a side shot location just east of the signal into the yard was what I was looking for in this light. It was only a 10 minute ride from Galt to Wolverton with their 7 car train so I didn’t have more then 2 minutes to set up for a pan shot. Lucky lightning conditions were great so it wasn’t an issue to tune up the camera for the shot of this GP20CECO at a steady 15 mph.

CP T07 finishes doubling up hoppers for their trip to Agincourt Yard in Scarborough with SOO 4410 taking the lead that inspired many people to chase it down its 10 mph journey to the GTA. The ditch light on the right started working as they were getting ready to depart Havelock but as they rounded the curve westbound along Highway 7, it decided to burn out again and never turn back on. Not sure what the deal is with that but it added an interesting affect to the unit along the chase on this cloudy mild day.

OSR 1594 cancels their clearance between mile 88 to east siding switch Pender as they take OSR’s CAMI job down the old CP St Thomas Sub towards Ingersoll where they will drop there train of autoracks and proceed light power down the Port Burwell Spur to Salford and terminate

Driving up the hill toward Stuart Street seeing the GMD1 in lead working Hamilton was something you need to stop for even with the -20 degree lake winds just completely taking over your body. They headed to the west end of the yard to spot some tank cars on a cut that needed to be lifted, came back to the east end here at Stuart street then headed back into the yard. 10 minutes passed and they still don’t pull up to a point where it’s shootable and was making me confused as I didn’t want to wait in this cold much longer as I couldn’t feel my upper body. Just then they pull a cut of cars out of the yard and start to proceed to the main track for headroom when VIA 97 the VIA operated inner Canada Amtrak train flies around the corner pacing this yard job’s train as it pulls out. Will they be side by side? No, unfortunately 1437’s nose ducked under the bridge before the Maple Leaf got closer into the main frame of the shot but what do ya do. Still a cool scene to see Canada only operated GMD1’s with Amtrak equipment in the background. With the perfect sun light to, the last thing I’d do is complain.

Waiting for this train to cross the bridge, I was concerned I was going to get long hood forward power because this specific turn job from NS’s Bison Yard in Buffalo runs with whatever they can take over there. So seeing the pair of rebuilt SD50’s come over the bridge in full sun facing the right direction, was sweet. Later, these guys will tie their train down just east of Duff where CN 531 will meet them

The 3 GE’s could be heard miles in advanced pulling CN 435 up into Paris Junction. It navigates the S curves just east of the Junction at a steady 45 mph and the ear piercing squealing from the flanges against the curves was all you could hear for minutes

CN L551 pulls it’s power set around the bay to grab a cut of cars from Hamilton to take back to Aldershot. Good to catch up with the boys at the Bayview meet this year
