During the 1980 NRHS Convention held in Toronto, a couple of excursions were run with CN Mountain 6060. The first was to Niagara Falls on July 27th. Returning in the evening, she struts upgrade through Hamilton Junction and will have no assistance from the upstart FP9A 6539, which was supposedly along for insurance.

The NRHS Convention held in Toronto in 1980 is over, and the Independence Limited is on its way home on a misty summers afternoon. Heading up a string of private cars bound for Fort Erie, Southern FP7A 6141 and N&W hi-nose SD35 1518 laid over at the Spadina roundhouse during the event, but never saw service on any of the excursions that were held.

I managed to catch one VIA detour after the Mississauga derailment on CP in November 1979. VIA #84 is heading up the Halton Sub at Burlington, after the evacuation zone was extended south to Lake Ontario. I wonder if anyone knows how many VIA trains took this routing?

I heard this eastbound on the scanner as I was driving up to Guelph Jct. When he called "Highball Puslinch 8446 east" I knew I had a chase on my hands. At this late date I wasn't about to let an RS3 leading slip through my hands. The first shot was at Campbellville, where I slipped onto the 401 and rocketed over to Trafalgar Road. As a train of work equipment it was limited to 40 per I believe, so I knew I had a good chance the pursuit would pay off. The second unit is RS10 8465.

When CP ran extra trains from Toronto to Hamilton they were known as Extra Hams, a designation that I always found humorous because it sounded like something you'd ask a family member to bring for Thanksgiving. Pictured at Desjardins, and about to duck under one of Hamilton's most beautiful bridges are SD40s 5539, 5529 and GP35 5004.

I guess you could say this was a sign of things to come, although we didn't know it at the time. CP power never ran through on the TH&B, it was always changed off at Aberdeen. For whatever reasons, that didn't happen to the "Extra Acid" pictured here. Upon arrival in Hamilton it was re-crewed and sent on its way to Port Maitland. Of course no one was complaining as most often these acid trains were powered by a pair of SD40s, which we all hated. If it had to happen the powers that be chose an outstanding lash-up with RS10 8564, GP35 5022 & GP30 5000.

In the 1980s, a fertilizer plant in Port Maitland, Ontario, started receiving unit trains of phosphate rock from Florida, as well as acid trains from Northern Ontario. CP handed both of these trains off to the TH&B at Aberdeen Yard.<br> <br> One such "rock extra" is pictured here at Vinemount with TH&B geeps 72, 73, 77 & 403 working their collective guts out.

The three Penn Central geeps pictured here on the Starlight, are from the era when power from three different railways was supplied for this train. On Sundays, the Starlight always brought power that would be used on that weeks Goderich Job, which in this case is an RS10/RS18 combo.

CP detour #942 has changed direction after coming down the Goderich Sub (see pic 8078) and is now heading east through Bayview. It will get back on home rails at Canpa.

Some detours that resulted from the Mississauga derailment and evacuation came east across the Galt Sub to Guelph Junction, and south on the Goderich Sub into Hamilton. They pulled up into Aberdeen Yard, then backed around the wye and continued east on the Oakville Sub via Hamilton Junction.<br> <br> CP #942 is the first one I saw and is about to duck under Hwy 6 with RS18 8769 and three C&Os - GP30s 3046, 3006 and GP35 3537.

After sitting in the hole at Paris West for VIA #83 (see pic 8031), CP #903 continues on its detour routing over the Dundas Sub, putting on a show as only Alcos can.

The East Local sets out from Hamilton on a bright and cold January morning with GP7 #77. Most often it ran with one unit, but on rare occasions it had two. You'd never find a fan out in shorts on a day like this. Wink!

The east local with GP7 72, is returning to Hamilton after a days work. Once around the wye the hogger will back into Aberdeen Yard, drop his train, and return the geep to the roundhouse. Day is done.

Wide open and with exhaust smoke boiling out the stack of FPA4 6778, VIA #83 rockets past CP detour 903, in the hole at Paris West. Hard acceleration is common on westbounds at this location, but I had to wonder if the CN crew was putting on a show, knowing a CP crew was watching.
