Hi, my name is Glenn Cherry and I reside in Hagersville, ON (formerly Garnet, ON). As such, I have listen to train whistles and followed the Southern Ontario Railway and the CN Hagersville / Nanticoke Subdivision closely for several years. My hobbies include Railfanning (primarily CAN & USA), Photography and being a 'G' Scale Train Modeller. My current camera is a Nikon D600.

RLK 4057 and stable-mate NECR 3840 slowly climb upgrade past the then idle elevators through Hagersville with one of several wind turbine trains destined for SOR's Franklin Yard further south near Nanticoke, ON. Franklin Yard is located on the US Steel spur just off of Concession 3 and served as a temporary, convenient trans load site for local wind turbine units rail to truck. CEFX 2019 sits parked for the moment on siding HD 34. Additionally I would like to enter this photo into the 'Time Machine' challenge as a companion photo to my 2011 photo http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=26075 and moreover partnered with the original photo submitted by John Eull http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=4863 of 1986. The office / depot was smoked between photos and the water tower repainted white with a blue base. The 'Time Machine' challenge provides an opportune and interesting comparison.

For the <b><a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/time-machine target=_blank>Time Machine</b></a> RLK 3873 is the selected power this day for SOR's short lived daily switching service to customers Hagersville north along the line to and including Caledonia. SOR 595X is just returning to Hagersville from a light run to Caledonia on a clear, sunny winter's afternoon. These week-day treks provided a most enjoyable day light chase providing many differing photo opportunities. RLK 3873 in clean livery is seen easing upgrade past the former Hagersville Elevators combining for a nice local winter scene. I would like to enter this photo into the "Time Machine" challenge to be partnered with the 1986 photo, of the CP powered steel train (6 month) at the exact same location, submitted by John Eull. Note the addition of the lattice tower, Haldimand-Norfolk water tower (green) and 3 in-a-row blue load-out bins. The white office depot peaking around from behind the lead power in each photo is no longer part of the facility due to a suspicious fire. During the early morning hours SRY 119 and companion SRY 110, in attractive Rail Link livery, are systematically unloading deliveries and then loading empty rail cars on the MV Carrier Princess at Seaspan's Coastal Intermodal Ferry Terminal at the Port of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, BC. The mainland connecting port being Seaspan's Tilbury Terminal, Delta, BC. Note the use of customary buffer cars, etc. This certainly was a most interesting, viable and impressive rail - marine service at the time of my brief visit to the Vancouver Island March 2009.

RLK 5005, RMPX 9431 and RLK 4057 quietly wait for the evening crew to take SOR 597's daily freight to Brantford and CN interchange. This photo of SOR 597 and surrounding trackage was taken from Concession 8 (south edge of the Garnet Yard)looking southward. The still standing trackside switch cabinet in the distance (mile 4.4) marks the crossing site and diamond of the former CN Cayuga Subdivision and the Hagersville Subdivision. The connecting track still exists plus part of the Cayuga Subdivision to the west (almost to Regional Road 55. SOR continue to utilize this trackage for tank car storage. The n/w connecting track has been disconnected at the westerly point. Fast forward to this day and same location ... now its G&W livery / colours, numerous wind turbines and drone photography.

CN 2244 and CN 5540 striped with additional power parade CN 710 high atop the iconic bridge structure over the Napanee River adding grandeur to the picturesque Springside Park and peaceful waterfall. In order to capture this angle to catch a eastbound and to include the whole of the waterfall, I camped (with permission) under shade on adjoining property owned by Gibbard Furniture, Canada's oldest furniture factory (at the time at least). Employees gained a new perspective that day respecting patience, nearby beauty and railfanning.

This photo (3rd of series) captures the first rail car inbound delivery to the Railview Trans Load facility serviced by siding #33 Hagersville Sub. With RLHH 3403 in the lead, RLK 4057 became the first locomotive to roll its wheels onto the new siding on July 5th, 2015 at 7:45 p.m. These two familiar power units dropped RLHH 597 south of town prior to spotting the single car loaded with millet placing one bay directly over the pit. The contents of RLOX 60233 would be conveniently and quickly transloaded the next day into three trucks for Armstrong Milling Co. Ltd, Nelles Corners (Supplier of Canada's Premier Bird Feed). In the foreground, siding #40 veers off of the main to the right and in the far background an interesting relic continues to rust away amidst undergrowth. It is a lonely memory from years past and reportedly last used for storage purposes. The relic has an interesting / older type undercarriage and one can still albeit barely make out the 1943 CN logo that of a superimposed tilted wafer with wording Serves All Canada on a maple leaf (probably white in the day). It must be seen close up to be appreciated as all is lost / rust in a photo. Lots of rail related activiey in Hagersville these days!

This is the 2nd photo of a proposed short series featuring Southern Ontario Railway (SOR) and the outbound kick-off of Railview's Trans Loading Services at Hagersville. RLHH 597 with RLHH 3404 (lead) and RLHH 3409 are seen idling on siding #33 and soon to depart with the first outbound shipment of grain cars loaded with this years local grown wheat. AEX 14952 grabs the honour of being the first grain car of the Railview consignment, arriving from southern USA via Fort Erie, to be loaded here with 90 ton of Haldimand County grown wheat. CN Hagersville's signage is in the background and a few of the Mattice family can be seen in the foreground also capturing the moment. This enterprise should attract a measure of local interest for years to come. In fact and as I am adding text, I hear this night's nocturnal RLHH 597 rumbling through town and along side Railview elevators just a block away ... music to a railfan's ears.

Introducing newest rail entity (2015)to utilize rail service from Southern Ontario Railway on the Hagersville Sub. Railview Investments operated by L.F. Mattice Farms & Trucking Inc. of Hagersville (Dedicated Carriers of Edible Grain)is a full service storage & trans load facility conveniently located on #33 siding (new) adjacent to SOR's main line through Hagersville. Siding #33 with a length of 1450', switch and derail was installed June 2015 and utilized initially to provide convenient inbound trans loading services (e.g. millet) to Armstrong Milling Co Ltd, Nelles Corners, ON. Incidentally, siding #33 replaces an old time, idle Grand Trunk Stock Yard siding of years past. This photo depicts the Mattice clan and Railview facility transloading wheat from truck to rail car as part of a thirty 90 ton car order. Special thanks to both Fred and Freddie Mattice for permission to photograph and be part of the track installation and first few inbound and outbound shipments. SOR tends to spot cars in conjunction with its northbound, nocturnal RLNN 597. Consequently photos in good lighting are difficult to obtain but alas I have a few, including SOR motive power and railroading events, in reasonable lighting to submit in days following. A hometown proud, success story and rewarding, interesting experience!

This photo brings together two iconic loves right in the heart of a productive agricultural community ... 3 for 1. Essex Terminal Railway ETR 9 with tender is seen a top the neat, wooden bridge that crosses the Brubacher Farm located just north of St Jacobs Farmer' Market & Flea Market. No. 9 is the star performer this day for a fall steam excursion running from Waterloo to St Jacobs and return. With permission, this moment with an 0-6-0 iron horse and picturesque little trestle was captured while being surrounded by several, inquisitive equine.

Differing modes of transportation vehicles (2 of each) are captured at the Grand during a rare albeit timely encounter on a beautiful fall day ... providing a neat over and under shot per se. Train Engineer and Boat Captain salute each other with repeated, friendly horn blasts to everyone's delight and to protect their respective rights of passage. RLK 1808 and lead by stable-mate NECR 3840 are northbound over the Grand River at Caledonia enroute to the Stuart Street shop, Hamilton for maintenance. Grand River 'Belle' and her first mate 'Princess' (in the distance) along with Queen (idle back at the launch) are part of a lunch and dinner venue for patrons to enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Grand River, its country like scenery and Grand River Cruise's hospitality, signature slow-cooked Ontario beef and low cal deserts.

Kettle Valley Railway's excursion train powered by the spit & polished steam locomotive 3716 is seen returning up grade to the Prairie Valley Station at Summerland, BC after its two hour junket through Prairie Valley, its scenic vistas and open view of Okanagan Lake from high a-top Trout Creek trestle (238 feet above the canyon floor).

The South Simcoe Railway operates over four miles of former CN trackage between Tottenham and Beeton. Excursions take approximately 50 minutes and passengers ride in 1920 era coaches ... push north and pull south. The star of the show, in attractive livery, is an ex-CP 4-4-0 #136 built in 1883. This starlet was used in the 1970's for the CBC television series The National Dream. This morning's steam excursion was captured amidst fall colours on its return trek as it nears Tottenham Station.

Boys will be boys! Even though a new, modern pool with life guards exists nearby at the east end of this fully facilitated park, these young lads (and others) choose this more daring form of enjoyment. Their fun is not interrupted in the least by RLHH 597 as it slowly rumbles over the iconic structure spanning the Grand River at Caledonia. On this warm summer evening, RLHH 597 is powered by RLHH 3403 in G&W livery and SOR 4057 still in RailAmerica stable.

With pristine RLHH 3404 in the lead, RLHH 597 daily freight trundles across the Grand River Bridge at Caledonia in good light on a colourful, inviting Fall evening enroute to interchange at Brantford/Paris. This particular evening set the stage with an earlier than normal crossing, soft lighting, clear reflections, historic backdrop and fishing enthusiasts.

The fine folks at Waterloo Central Railway hosted a steam photo freight on June 30, 2016 and powered by Essex Terminal Railway No. 9. ETR #9 is a 1400 h.p. steam powered 0-6-0 hand fired, coal burning locomotive built in 1923 by the Montreal Locomotive Works. Railfans rode and photographed the special steam freight consist at the Station & Restoration Shop in St. Jacobs before crossing the Conestoga River and heading deep into Mennonite farming country to the Waterloo Spur terminus in Elmira and return. Photo run-by location is in the midst of lush crops mid way between St. Jacobs and Elmira.
