Raised in Regina Saskatchewan, attending University in Toronto. Admittedly a late bloomer to the railfanning game, as I started during the 2020 pandemic and wouldn't have my Canon Rebel T7 until a year later in October 2021. Enjoy the mix of locations, as I am always eager to come home where the good stuff is!

Work season is starting to pick up speed in Ontario with the second work train already beginning to dump rail along sections of the MacTier Subdivision before May. The trailing unit CP 8047 led from Chicago, planning to be replaced with the pair 6080/5988. 5988 unfortunately faced some issues prior to departure, then bringing 8047 back into the picture by Toronto diesel. It sounded like a plan to make 8047 lead did exist but did not come to fruition and successfully evaded the wye. Here it rounds past Avenue Road's underpass with the CP North Toronto Station Clock Tower enjoying its retirement as a beacon for LCBO customers.

Since the merger/acquisition of KCS by CP, the power from each railroad has been slow to diffuse into each other's old trackage. The taste of KCS leaders on CP has been sweet nevertheless as shown by this 2-234 when one winds up leading. Initially the two units were running 1-1-0 until London where it became 2-0-0 to speed up the process of dumping traffic in Wolverton, proceeding light power from there to Toronto.

The apparent drought of 9WLs leading outbound from CN's Mac Yard were briefly interrupted with a flash flood of 3 in the first week of April. BCOL 4641 and CN 2517 were paired together and were responsible for L516 on April 1st (if I recall correctly), then the duo led 435 on the 3rd ( <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51759"> http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=51759 </a> ). Conveniently, the 3rd CWL leader took place when a number of railfans were out in Welland (myself included) finding CP 9014 in the yard. A good friend of mine who frequents Mac Yard notified multiple groups upon departure, giving plenty of time for us to roundabout onto the Halton Sub. Here it knocks down the bridge at Guelph Line on the last bit of mileage before merging with the Oakville Sub.

<b> (Skip to paragraph 2 to read about the locomotive) </b> During the summer I had been making some intensive cycling excursions to the Weyburn Subdivision from Regina when my ride wasn't available for the week. I road biked 55km on the first excursion to Milestone which yielded 8781 S on 148 ( <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50222"> http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50222 </a> ) which led to a scare on the ride home when my rear tire burst. Fortunately a friend of mine picked me up that day after I lugged my bike 4km in the 32º heat to the nearest town. This time round I came overprepared and my backpack was filled with spare water bottles, tire tubes and bike repair equipment, which almost worried me about a self-fulfilling prophecy situation in which the extra weight risked another burst. Fortunately no such outcome came to fruition and I was able to complete the full 100km ride round trip. Having no space to pack a lunch that day I made a calorie-heavy stop at Canadian Superstore on the way home.

<br> If you know any retired guys from Louisiana in the 90s, MRI 2180 may induce some nostalgia in them, having been built as a GP7 for ATSF, and spending some time in the hands of New Orleans and Lower Coast Railroad around then. A crew who used to run the unit reached out to me on Facebook to explain the inside joke about this unit, explaining that the paint they applied to the locomotive prior to this scheme was originally supposed to be a bright red, but quickly got bleached in the sun to a purple color after entering service. The group of crews who frequented this locomotive gave this ugly duckling the appropriate nickname "Barney" to refer to the unit (Seen here <a href="http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2486924"> http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2486924 </a> ). Eventually, the locomotive was sold to the NPRR-based (Northern Plains Railroad) Mohall Railroad Inc. leasing company, which apparently happened without much warning to the crews, and worried them that the locomotive had been scrapped. The guy who reached out was relieved to see my pictures of this locomotive, knowing their old Barney lives on, and intends to one day plan a vacation to Saskatchewan hopefully before its current lease ends. Today 2180 currently calls Corinne home to work the Richardson International Grain Elevator for spotting duties when needed.

Just minutes prior I had been trying to dry my jacket in the wind after a band of rain had just dropped torrential downfall on me, as it was my only protection from the elements I had with bicycle as my main mode of transportation. The winds persisted throughout the morning, and the banding of clouds made for some fun backdrop in an otherwise backlit situation as 2-GPS-20 carries emergency ballast bound for Red Deer Alberta. For those of you out east who were curious about 9017 being taken off the annual sprayer last year, you have this train to blame as 9017's weed killing duties prematurely ended. Trailing units were CP 5908, CMQ 9020 and CP 6300, the latter of which was a power move bound for Moose Jaw

Streetrunning? Not quite, although CP H17-27 mimicked such a scene when it crawled through the shallow-angled Old Weston crossing where one could capture the awaiting road traffic in the frame with ease. RTC, West Tower and the crew onboard 6045 were at this point hurrying to get the train into the yard before the crew's 12 hours were up, but decision making was time consuming enough that H17 slowed down to wait for instructions. At the moment this photo was taken, they only had 10 minutes remaining on the clock, and the straw that broke the camel's back was a failure by West Tower to notify RTC of a last minute change to the track H17 was lined into, and so they took the light onto the incorrect track and had to come to a stop until the clock ran out. They would block the crossing for about 90 minutes until H19 was ordered to rescue and subsequently use this consist eastbound. Before heading home, I would notify some of the drivers about the situation and advised them to take a detour. Among these included an unfortunate fellow (waiting second in line just to the right of the silver car in image) who was driving his motorbike to Cyclewerx just 1 block on the other side of Old Weston for repairs for a faulty start-up, and figured taking the risk of turning off his bike was worthwhile given the short distance. It was only once I told him that H17 was out of hours that this decision would become regretful as he couldn't get it to start up again. I'm unsure if he waited the full 90 minutes or if he pushed his bike for the 1.5 km detour to the shop (compared to 280 m direct). Part of me hopes he figured a way to get it started after I left.

CN 3008 hits the unnamed curve at 16th Ave in Richmond Hill as it snakes south towards Doncaster Junction where the Brampton-bound intermodal will then venture west. A cautious mindset coupled with 102 needing a second crew change after Capreol made the wait much longer than what I would consider "worth it" but since I wanted this curve off my bucket list for quite some time, I doubled down on the wait.

Over the summer, I had been itching to shoot the SRC movements on the scenic ex-CN Avonlea Subdivision, even if modern activity was a shell of the former power variety once seen on the trackage. I had initially camped out on the southeastern side of the valley in the hopes of capturing a scenic view of the CN Moose Jaw bridge but I drew an unlucky light power card so I got around to the street running portion of their transfer with CP. It apparently took me a while as I had just been pulling into Home Street when I could see 2238 rising upgrade around the corner, making me scramble to get my wide-angle lens out in time. To the left, a crew in a work truck escorted the local towards the junction with the Avonlea, and manually protected each roadway the tracks intersected with. Prior to their departure towards Truax, I had a fun chat with both crews and would, unfortunately, have to decline the temptation of a chase as I had to be back in Regina for a shift at my summer job.

CP 2-230 clears Oshawa West moments after the crew finished dealing with a locked axle. I believe it was the 14th that began to smoke after departing Toronto Yard and set off the defect detector near Cherrywood, so they pulled into the siding at Whitby to take off the breaks on that axle before continuing business as usual. They managed to pick up some speed by the time they rounded the corner behind me with the assistance of UP 7975 which seemed to stalk 7023 around Canada for a couple weeks following this, as the pair were then rallied back and forth by Montreal and Edmonton on 118 and 119.

UP 5260 leads CP 529 past the historic Summerhill Clock Tower on the North Toronto Sub. When I had seen this train earlier in the day, the faded yellow was a little more apparent, so I was happy to see it in the golden hour where the parallels in light and the paint did it some justice.

A shot that eventually grew on me was this darkened capture of CP 6644 leading 528. I wanted to experiment with this bridge on the Belleville Sub just east of Leaside, and a backlit leader presented the opportunity to shoot this from the side. Unfortunately, Toronto Yard experienced congestion on both tracks as multiple inbound trains fought to get into the yard and RTC would have to stop 528 in Leaside while things were getting sorted out. This delay was long enough for the sun to go down, taking away any direct sunlight, but the indirect sunset sky made for a nice backdrop behind this thing as it passed over.

Here is a story about just how far I have been willing to go in railfanning. With no access to a ride and being a newcomer to the railfan community that had buy n' large missed every other dash 8 leader opportunity, I seized this one with great effort when I realized Q102 would be running too late for daylight in the Toronto region. I planned an elaborate day trip to Sudbury via the daily Ontario Northland bus service from Toronto to Sudbury followed by a local bus ride to Capreol to ensure I was in the right place at the right time. I packed all 3 meals with me for the day to save time and money for this trip; and looking back, I certainly gambled with sub-par odds of seeing this thing by doing so. Nevertheless, the effort paid off and I am forever grateful to have seen at least one lead.

Here Q102 finishes a 40-minute layover in Capreol, never failing to waste a second after it had a lengthy meet in LaForest Ontario. It would go on to travel the entire CN portion of the Bala Subdivision in under 8 hours, even outpacing my bus ride home.

Over the last week or so, Toronto has enjoyed a stress-free guarantee to watch the last GP38-2 in dual flag livery operate on the 4-axle pair allocated to H22, H24, and H27 out of Lambton Yard. On Saturdays, the duo is taken on the latter to work on the Canpa Sub and in Area H. With CP 4404 facing north, overcast conditions were integral to prevent backlighting on the unit, and an erratic temperature hike typical of the GTA allowed for some puddles to facilitate a reflection shot or three as compensation for the grey scenery.

Another reason you should never rule out a train as a "night train" was the story of this 422. Originating out of Sudbury at 4pm on the 18th, most were discouraged from seeing it given the typical ~12 hour transit time from Sudbury on CP. This was doubly the case when it was confirmed past MacTier at 8pm that night. The confusion that arose the next morning when it wasn't in Toronto yet led to the realization that they tied it down in Buckskin overnight due to congestion in MacTier. Also noteworthy about this train was that the 6259 came up to Sudbury on a separate 421 to the 7032 and 7022, leading most to believe that it was just another unit for the Levack job. That plus the portable ditch lights that were installed 2 days prior made its lead all the more surprising.

With the typical presence of meltwater after a recent snowfall in Toronto, I spotted a well-placed puddle west of the Howland signals. Using the digital viewfinder on my DSLR to keep the camera at ground level, I only had enough time to grab one shot of the fast-coming 421. Being a partly cloudy day with some shadows just metres away, I was lucky to get full sun and a relatively tolerable leader to boot.

With railfans across the GTA scattering to photograph the NBSR SD70M-2s on 2-230 on a Saturday afternoon, many were opting for wider yet difficult shots where one could frame all 4 cleanly into one shot. I had been instead wasting time away near MacMillan Yard in Vaughan with friends in the hopes we would be ready for the slim chance BCOL 4644's presence would yield a departure in that day. With confirmation of the lead units on the last 2 outbound trains via scanner and a notification that 2-230 began working Lambton, I scrambled back to the North Toronto Sub with one of said friends, sacrificing some of our other options for locations by instead sticking to locations with fastest public transit access. My friend went for the Howland Signals about 200m west of me whilst I found a little opening in the foliage with a clean line of sight for about 20 metres from the tracks, ideal for panning. Using an unreliable, yet tried and true method of spraying and praying, this frame became part of the yield.

I'm beginning to realize how much I've neglected SD60s as I post this since this is the first one I've actually photographed in the year or two I have been using my camera. In past opportunities, my attention was often distracted by something more valuable, but today the other thing on my radar was an ACU. I was lucky to have picked Osler as my spot for that, otherwise, I would have prematurely headed home without knowing what was coming.

VIA 2 applies its breaks liberally as it gradually descends down the Don Valley to arrive at Toronto. Behind it is the Prince Edward Viaduct, built in 1918 to serve some impressive urban capabilities. The upper deck holds the busy Bloor Street East and a pair of bicycle lanes, whilst the lower deck serves as a vital and scenic connection for the TTC Line 2. I'm curious if I'll be able to find any oldies when there were once streetcars on the upper deck. In future, I may return to attempt getting a T1 in the shot...

A foreign power duo third wheeled by a CP AC44 leads CP 234-12 during an early January snow squall. Having a short train made it easy for the train to pick up speed and kick some snow after holding at Davenport for a Newmarket GO Train.
