It’s so hard to believe how much ran through Fort Erie at one time! Amazing shot.
In the spring of 1965 when I was 6 years old, my mother ‘made us’ pick wild strawberries near the west end of the rail yard. I was very focused on what I was doing and my back was facing the tracks. (We were a safe distance from them.) Without notice a pair of these F units came along. The engineer took great delight in blowing the horn just as he was even with us. I know…because I saw the smile on his face as I was running full steam back to the car.
The 676 and 725 were built at GMD London, I presume to avoid payment of customs duties.
My Grandfather retired from Wabash, St Thomas in 1958, started as a Fireman in 1911, “promoted” to Engineer 1914. I can imagine he might have been there done that over the years, steam and diesel. I remember some family conversations at how upset Grandpa was when N&W took over the Wabash and changed the name of the railway.
