A fury of sound: At track speed 5533\'s Hogger snags the train orders as the sound of the white flags snapping in the wind is drowned out by the whine of turbochargers and roar of 567, 251 and 244 motors. Pulling hard with SD-40 5533 is MLW M636 4717 and RS-3 8446 (and for an ALCO / MLW fan it is the 4717 and 8446 pushing 5533). Such is 70\'s railroading as CP Rail Extra 5533 West tops the Niagara Escarpment grade at Guelph Junction station on this spring 1978 Sunday morning. Kodak Kodachrome ASA64 Diapositive high resolution image. Photographer S. Danko.

  1. Further to commnets I made on another photo of two big units and a small one, the 8446 may have been destined for setoff at Woodstock, or it may have been coming off at London for a worktrain the next morning. RS-3s were common on worktrains at this time.

I worked the first 23 of my 37 years on CP starting in 1973, along this route and I really enjoy the opportunity to look back when I see photos from this era.

  2. Looking at the bald head, I think that’s Earl Fitzpatrick or EWF. Worked there forever

  3. bruce, it is Earl Fitzpatrick. He was a real gentleman. He passed away a few years ago.
